It's intended to give teams incentives to hire black coordinators and assistants.  Whether it will or not is debatable and whether that ultimately leads to more black coaches is open to further debate.

I think it's good that the NFL is trying something.  Certainly understand the critiques of their exact plan though.

This is a much easier way for the NFL to see if their rule is working, too. With the bigger sample size, you get to see if adjustments are made at the lower levels.

With head coaches, you only got so many per year, and with highly qualified candidates always on the sidelines it made it really difficult to analyze, IMO.

The Ravens are under a bit of pressure here to fill what, 4 or 5 vacancies now, and if they don't do with a quality number of POCs (and nor do other teams) they'll know their rule isn't working in a matter of 2 or 3 seasons.

I believe the Ravens hired Rob Ryan, Anthony Weaver, and D'Anton Lynn this offseason. 2/3 POC. It could be more if Culley is replaced or if any others leave.

Great perspectives and logical points!!!

Maybe my initial reaction was overthinking it. I do still think that some people won't be interviewed because they work for a rival team but you guys are probably right that the other benefits outweigh my concern. There have been plenty of times when I liked two candidates equally in the hiring process and could've gone either way. That's where my first thought originated.

I was a hiring manager in a previous job, and what you say there has happened to me, but it was the exception vs the rule. I think it's very plausible that at some point a team will have a minority and white candidate as their finalists, who they see as close enough that they'll go with the white one to avoid rewarding a rival team, but it'll be rare enough that it's not the issue I see with the new rule. In most of my experiences I had a clear-cut #1, such that on a couple occasions I was willing to go to my boss and ask for extra money to make a better salary offer, knowing I'd have to pay for it somewhere down the road.

For me this rule is more a matter of not being something that I believe will provide much of an impetus to increase minority hiring, and that it will often end up rewarding a team (see my comments on the Ravens/Cully) that isn't really as deserving as an individual or organization further back on that coach's resume.

Per Zrebiec Asst TE coach Andy Bischoff expected to go to Houston with Culley.

Per Dan Graziano, Zach Orr is now LB coach of the Jags.

Funny, last year we didn't lose anyone that I can recall.

Bischoff is my son's neighbor.  Not anymore I guess.

And Keith Williams as pass game specialist. He was the personal WR coach of Tyreek Hill and Davante Adams, among others.

These two hires are pretty intriguing.

Both POC's, too. So that's at least 4 new coaches, on the Ravens that are POC's. Not surprised to see the Ravens pursuing a path that will potentially lead to more picks.

I like that that they're reaching into college. These are experienced coaches but they're fresh blood for the NFL, rather than recycling the same NFL coaches. They sound exciting to me. I like this thinking by the front office. New ideas sure are needed in the passing game to make best use of the talent we have, as well as making the Ravens more appealing to possible FAs..

At times the Harbaugh connection can be a pain in the ass.

And to what end? We're trying to win a Super Bowl here. Michigan sucks. Cut it out, Jim.

Well, to be fair I'm sure the guy is trying to advance in the coaching ranks.  QB coaches are much more likely to be considered for OC jobs than RB coaches.  He probably thinks he has a better chance at getting ahead by taking a QB coach position that might get him an OC job and then one day a HC job.

Just shtick. Can never blame anyone for taking a better opportunity. Hope it works out for him. And for Jim. Maybe he won't have to fire so many coaches this year.

I'm surprised that college quarterbacks coach is viewed as a promotion over NFL RBs coach, if that's the reason he made the switch.

I don’t think it’s that surprising. Quarterbacking, and teaching QBs, at the Power 5 level is probably more complex and valued than coaching NFL RBs. And Michigan’s offense is similar to many that you see in the NFL. That said, didn’t Weiss coach QBs with the Ravens at one point?

I suspect it was a brothers deal.

Either Jim thinks he is going to need to support his new OC or maybe John found Weiss a landing spot because he was comfortable moving on.

Either way, this Michigan pipeline is getting tiresome.
