Balt Sun: Orioles’ Brandon Hyde ‘without question’ should be AL Manager of the Year. Just ask his players.

I have changed my tune a bit on Hyde the last month. Still don't like the way he uses the bullpen and his hang up on lefty - righty matchups. And I don't like that he doesn't get on the umps with their horrible calls.

But there is no question he gets the most out of the players and they like playing for him and that his huge.

I wish Hyde would use relievers for more than one inning but I suspect that is an organizational philosophy.  I think the umpire thing is something fans want, but does not have a lot of impact.  I think today's umpires generally have a real short trigger.

Hyde has done a terrific job.  He should be Manager of the Year, and I expect he will be.

Elias will be the Executive of the Year.  To the victors go the spoils.

The chirping is an easy thing to complain about that's hard to quantify, it's really impossible to say what difference it would make. I bet most fanbases think their team gets screwed by the umps or refs, I'd like to see a breakdown of the wrong ball/strike calls team by team. I'm sure somebody has done it, or maybe it's easy to figure out with baseball savant, but I am feeling lazy today.

Playing around on baseball savant.

O's pitchers had 2.0% of pitches out of the zone called strikes, 17th in the league. Average is 2.0%

O's pitchers had 1.6% of pitches in the zone called balls, 19th in the league. Average is 1.7%.

O's batters had 2.3% of pitches out of the zone called strikes, 5th in the league. Average is 2.0%

O's batters had 1.5% of pitches in the zone called balls, 26th in the league. Average is 1.7%.

The pitching seems unremarkable, very close to average. The batters do get more bad calls than average, more balls are called strikes, and fewer strikes are called balls. The difference between 2.3% and 2.0% is about 80 pitches, so 1 per every 2 games worse than average on the would be balls that are called strikes.

Does that change if Hyde complains? Who knows, maybe it could be better. But also, this seems to get mentioned like 5 times in every game thread and that doesn't seem fair either.

All I really care about in a manager is do you get all the players pulling the rope the same way.  Hyde unquestionably has been able to do that.

I care about more than that, but that's the most important thing and agree that Hyde excels. More than makes up for any shortcomings I perceive elsewhere.

Very deserving of his pending MOY award.

his team won 101 games - impressive.  But Altobelli won a WS, so, yeah....

According to the umpire scorecards site the O's are almost dead even in total favorable calls putting them smack dab in the middle of the pack in baseball.

Meh. Poor managers have won awards and WS rings numerous times. I stick by what I say about Hyde. I dont doubt the players like him and he may be great in the clubhouse. That only gets you so far if the team isnt winning on the field.

Do you think that (in the clubhouse) is more or less meaningful than any tactical moves a MLB Manager can make?

I'm sure Hyde does something in the playoffs that people won't like.

They go hand and hand. You win its easier to keep the clubhouse loose. Its clear the players like him but thats not gonna make things easier in the clubhouse when times get tough. Charmed life this year in never having any tough times. If you never lose a series things went incredibly well and you were lucky. Still havent seen him have to handle real adversity. At least not from a wins and losses perspective. Obviously navigating something like Felix's injury or other injuries could be tough but the winning helps there.

Tactically you can push wrong buttons and have them work out. You can push right buttons and have them fail. I think we all know that. Thats baseball. Over a long enough sample size his weaknesses will hurt the team more than the pluses help the team. That said, its certainly still possible he wins a ring here.

The best thing I can say about him is he isnt incompetent. If I take one thing back its saying hes the worst manager since Mazzilli. I think Perlozzo and Samuel were incompetent. They were in over their heads as managers. I dont think Hyde is incompetent.

The large sample tactical stuff is largely an organizational thing so I'll happily take a manager that is seemingly excelling in the other aspects of the job.
