FanGraphs: 2018 MLB Mock Draft v 3.0

11. Baltimore Orioles – Jonathan India, 3B, Florida

We’ve heard the Orioles all over the map. Weathers is a possibility if he gets here, and they’ve been heavy at recent starts by Ole Miss LHP Ryan Roliso and have also been tied to the top tier of college bats if one is still around, such as India in this mock. Baltimore has been mentioned with New Jersey prep right fielder Nick Decker in the second and Pennsylvania prep shortstop Sean Guilbe in the third.

CBS Sports: 2018 MLB Mock Draft: Auburn righty still projected to go No. 1 to Tigers in updated first round
https://www.cbssport...ed-first-round/

11. Baltimore Orioles: RHP Cole Winn, Orange Lutheran HS (California)

With both Stewart and Liberatore off the board here, the Orioles move on to take Winn, third on their prep pitcher board. They've been in on all the top high school pitchers after being connected to college arms previously. The O's haven't had much success developing pitchers lately but they keep trying, and they keep drafting kids with considerable upside. Winn fits.

Previous Mock Selection: LHP Shane McClanahan, South Florida

I'm looking forward to the draft. I'll be watching tomorrow night.

My position.  Everyone tries to make this BPA like in the NBA or NFL, but the goal isn't to draft the best player on your list each round, it's to draft the most talent from your list.  You have to consider where your reaches are (your list) and if you can get that guy with the next pick.

Typically I'm OK with Orioles 1st rd picks.

I'd like to see them go after profiles with more impact upside 1A-5.

Good track record of finding usable talent after the 5th round.  Actually a lot of good players selected in recent years after the 5th.

These seem to be the most common thoughts for the Orioles at #11.

Given the options, I'd lean towards India.

Need McClanahan to put some big signing numbers out there and try to get him to fall to #33.

I don’t see India falling to 11 at this point.

Normally I agree...but I'd have to see the overall organization picture for the next 2-3 years before I agree this time. Who are we letting walk? Are we trading anyone to pick up pieces to speed up the process? Getting an advanced college player will help in about 2 years ish. But if we are just starting to rebuild that player will be useless to us and just waste service time waiting on the rest of things to come together. Who are we keeping and how long do we control them? We had a run because these things happened to align for a young core at the same time. Having one reach here just as another is moving on is how you tread water for a decade.

With lack of a plan...the closest thing to BPA (which I might mention has a degree of subjectiveness, so it's kinda moot). With a better laid out plan I could say if a high ceiling HS player would line up better than an advanced college player. (And yes I know you are going to say...well if they come up too soon then you trade them for a big package and use those players to line up a core) but we all know they aren't going to do things functional or logical, so we have to hope that accidents and dumb luck put some talented guys under control around the same time.

I am all about taking the BPA.  I am just hoping that player is an advanced bat or pitcher that is coming from college.
