First surprise of Signing Day comes from 3-star TE Malik Jackson (Meade Senior HS), who flips from UConn to Maryland. He's ranked as the best tight end in the state of MD.

IMS: Locksley on Smallish Class, Unsigned Commits, Recruiting Plan

Bad News: Last year about 70% of all FBS signees, and 23 of 24 MD signees, signed early. If that trend follows, there won't be much left to form a class come February. Grad transfers and JUCOs (which Locksley referenced) can be a band-aid, but they will be of no help 3-4 years from now when you need some of the guys from this class to be impact players.

Good News: There's a dead period in recruiting from now until Jan 11, so other schools will be very limited in how they can contact the Terps' 5 unsigned verbals and pour on the negative recruiting. Still, the sooner Locksley gets back to College Park and gets his staff filled out, the better. The championship game is on Jan 7, but hopefully Alabama will be done before then. GO SOONERS!!!

How is Maryland's recruiting going in view of all the turmoil surrounding the program?

Open recruiting starts up at 12:01am ET tomorrow, and it looks like MD will have only 4 of 10 assistant coaching positions filled, none of whom happen to be the OC or DC, and none of the 4 have even been officially announced by the university. (and we know how that goes....*cough* Gattis)

So as for how the recruiting is going, I'd say it's off to a roaring start!

Not much activity in this thread lately, but there has been news on this front recently.

Good:

- The Terps are hosting a few players on visits this weekend, including a couple of their big unsigned commits (Land and Blount).

- Some new names have also emerged that are supposed to be on campus for OVs this weekend, all on the defense side, and none from the DMV.

- Speaking of DMV players, rumor has it Nick Cross was on campus. He will be taking his 5th and final OV next weekend at PSU, but since he lives so close it makes sense that he wouldn't necessarily want to use an OV to see UM.

Bad:

- Doesn't look good as far as keeping RB commit Jordan Houston. He was supposed to have an OV this weekend, but went to NC State instead. They really need a RB in this cycle too, since they didn't bring one in last year.

QB David Summers has flipped from UMD to Syracuse. Not a huge surprise, as he was a Matt Canada recruit.

Locksley has sent up the "bat signal" 6 times since last night, so we've got a few more to come. Thus far, the 3 confirmed commits:

- 3-star S Treron Collins (Fairburn, GA)

- 3-star JuCo DE Sam Okuayinonu (Virginia, MN)

- 3-star CB Erwin Byrd (Powder Springs, GA)

Collins is the best of the group thus far, and was ranked by some recruiting sites as a 4-star. Adding an experienced DE to replace Byron Cowart on the strong-side was an excellent pickup as well.

And as I mentioned earlier, 3-star QB David Summers (Trumbull, CT) decommitted and is headed to Syracuse.

3-star RB Jordan Houston (Oakton, VA) officially decommits from Maryland and will be headed to N.C. State. He's the 6th decommitment for the Terps so far.

BSL: National Signing Day Preview

With National Signing Day less than a week away, the Terrapins coaching staff has their work cut out for them to add some players to their very thin class. In this article, I break down the current class, the commits, and the players left on the big board.

Their prospects with the LeGendre kid sound like a Hail Mary, but at least they'll get him on campus this weekend. Sure hope you all are done with that polar vortex shit by then....I don't think getting frostbite on his visit is likely to impress him.

If they want any semblance of competition from the QB position headed into this season, it's probably going to have to come from a transfer.

I've seen speculation MD's class can actually jump to around 45th overall if they land the targets they expect to land.

So tough to project, but would obviously be huge. Locksley sent out 2 more bat-signals this morning, no word yet on who the commitments are from.

Which given what has gone on at CP,  in the last year,  would be an achievement.

Locksley has picked up 2 more commitments:

  • 3-star TE Tyler Devera (Oradell, NJ)
  • Unranked K/P Anthony Pecorella (Mineola, NY)

Pecorella has yet to be ranked, but is thought to be a better punter than kicker. Maryland now has the #75 class in the country, still worst in the conference.
