So it appears UNC football and men's basketball are completely clean per the latest.

Haha. Yeah, that makes total sense. The two highest profile revenue earning programs are clean. JLAW gif.

Not exactly completely clean, but not as bad as some had hoped, er, thought. "Failure to monitor academic support" isn't a positive, but it's not worthy of anything major. Just like Antoine and my guy told us a few months ago.

The NCAA also pulled all references to the men’s basketball and football programs in the new set of five allegations. The NCAA replaced the impermissible benefits allegation from the initial notice of allegations with a failure to monitor academic support charge.

The main concern isn't what's in it (ie a bunch of rehashing, and ultimately nothing), but the fact that the SEC is involved and doesn't want this cloud to go away until the school is dead.

Between this and the NC legislator threats (which are -hilarious-, btw), UNC is in the middle of everything.

Now that they've won the title, I'm pretty good with sitting back and watching this. Roy will have good teams regardless, and the basketball team isn't getting penalized. Do your thing, guys.

A commenter at Deadspin had a great run-down of just how little leverage NC has going against the ACC/NCAA in that case.

Hell, that might be a backdoor way to kill UNC if the NCAA really wants to do so (which, of course, they don't).

Norlander:

Long story way short: Big pic, UNC needs to get sanctioned. NCAA crippled by its own borders and rulebook language, didn’t want to overstep.

Historic ruling for NCAA. The criticism is completely valid. And people who love to lampoon the NCAA have never been given a sharper knife.

Jeff Eisenberg(cbb writer for yahoo)

In retrospect, huge blunder by NCAA enforcement to paint this as an extra benefits case. All UNC had to do was show students benefitted too.

Yeah, this was by far the easiest play, and they played it really well.

Wonder what Rashad McCants is thinking right now.

One thing I saw Jeff Goodman say is “I wonder how much the NCAA spent on this”.

What’s funny is that it sounds like the case can’t be made because of other student involvement, not because the program is clean.

That’s the lesson to learn from this..get other students involved and you should be fine!
