At what point do you begin to think about a contract extension? Of course you've got Kjerstad and possibly Mayo waiting in the wings, but there's a lot of value in a 120-130 OPS+ switch hitter.

Qualifying offer seems like a no-brainer. Either he accepts it and you're happy or he declines and you get a draft pick while Kjerstad takes over his role.

Id be entertaining him but I think he is gonna command more than Id want to give. Hes in line to get 4 or 5 years.

OPS is up to .812.   (.771 for his career.)

.900 OPS vs. LHP, 68 ab's.

11 homers in 84 ab's so far in June.

He's on pace for 43 homers.

Gotta think extend him and use Kjerstad/Stowers in trades.

Santander is really streaky, so this discussion probably goes very differently depending on whether he's currently hot or cold.

I mean as long as the streaks even out into an above-average hitter I'm fine with it, he was streaky last year but those streaks ended up being a 122 OPS+ at the end of the year

...and this is what you live with with every player you invest in.  Manny Machado is sporting an OPS under .700 today at age 31 and they'll be paying him 39M per year in a couple years through age 40.

When he OPS .800+ every month thru the rest of the season and has a good postseason. In 2023 he had an OPS over 1.000 for the whole month of May. He was under .700 in April and September. Let’s see how many people want to extend him if he has a .645 OPS this September.

Don’t make long term decisions when players are on short term heaters.

He's had 2,500 career ab's, and has a career .771 OPS.

I think we know who he is.

You don't have to have him... but a short-term deal wouldn't be the worst thing.

If you did extend him, would make it easier to move someone like Kjerstad.  (Who of course is also a reason you don't have to extend him.)

I remain convinced that a Qualifying Offer for Santander is the best option. I'm happy to have the pick and go to Kjerstad or Mayo in RF if he declines and signs elsewhere or happy to run it back with him on a 1/$20M deal if he accepts.

I think this is the right play unless he is willing to sign a home team discount extension for 3 years. Not likely.

Feels like another non-choice for the Orioles (I guess that's a choice), you let the clock run out and take the QO.

I'd put the Orioles price at 5/75, but I'd expect Kjerstad in RF next year and that's fine..

I have no sense of where AS would want to play (city, not RF) but I'd guess he'll be able to pick and work out a contract for 100M fairly easily. Wouldn't be surprised to see him be an early sign in the offseason and without knowing where he wants to play, I'd guess he'll have more than a few suitors.

It's the best option if you dont really want him back (fine if that's the case).

But he shouldn't have trouble finding a 3-4 year deal somewhere imo if he finishes in the.800 rangw.

Love Taters but definitely warming up to letting him go after the season. Especially if we keep Kjerstad.

He gets nuclear hot at times but I've started to call him Tony Poppers because he pops up. A lot.

Kjerstad profiles to be better than Santander in every offensive category...we'll see if the power is there. Santander does seem to be pretty good defensively.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?
