Tim Brosnan was named Executive Vice President, Business in February 2000 and in this role oversees all domestic and international business functions of Major League Baseball's Office of the Commissioner, including licensing, sponsorship, domestic & international broadcasting, special events and MLB Productions.
Interesting.
I know the Selig era has been good for the owners, but it really seems like there's a groundswell against Manfried. He's the keep things going the same way candidate, but he also likely wouldn't be easy to dominate with Selig behind him (even in retirement).
Werner is an owner, and would have some similarities to Selig in that and in being the former owner of a small-market club (San Diego), but why would the owners want to anoint one of their own again? Selig likely only kept the job because of the labor trouble precluding a wider search in 1993-4, so by the time he was named to the job officially he had experience by default.
Brosnan is interesting because he's an unknown guy (see: Goodell, Roger) who, like Manfried, came up through MLB but doesn't have the Selig stamp (for better or worse). He's a lawyer with DC connections. He's overseen all of the business functions of the sport for 15 years and likely can claim at least some credit for the increase in money in the sport over that period.
I can see him coming up through the stretch run as the compromise candidate and passing the other two to get the job.
