Have heard #orioles made 4-year offer to OF Mark Trumbo. His side looking for $80 mil. But showed flexibility to $70-$75 mil backloaded.

That is just awful.

Rather have EE at similar money.

Yeah. But EE will fetch plenty more than that right?

I too wouldn't give that much to Trumbo.

Probably not.

He turned down 4/80 from Toronto and right now, many of the teams that were pursuing are out.

He may end up with less than Trumbo because some NL teams may be ok with Trumbo in the OF...Colorado was reportedly interested...same with the Giants.

EE is 3 years older too...which I am sure is hurting him.

So, what does this tell us about our payroll?  Can we go to 170ish million?

My computer said "Orioles make 4 year off to" -- Then cut off the completion of the sentence.

I clicked, hoping it would say Dexter Fowler.  I thought, "Hey, they're serious about going for it all in 2017."

So disappointed ...

That is not a good contract. I'd go after Encarnacion for that money.

It tells me they can afford to extend Machado. Forget Trumbo and get Manny done.

That's the other issue...how does this effect Manny?

Probably this. Certainly this in theory. The problem is PA will always pay more to keep guys who've been here. So if it's Trumbo or no one Ill take Trumbo. Knowing full well its not a smart contract. If they do resign him I really hope the plan is DH.

Also on Trumbo, per source: Looking for full no-trade clause, at least early in talks, and #orioles won't go there.

If I were Trumbo, I would have said yes, immediately

What the hell is he waiting for?

I think 4/$70M would be a really risky deal for Trumbo.  Especially since we know we can't play him in the OF and get passable defense.  Wouldn't hate seeing him at 1B and Davis in RF, but I would hate paying him $15M+ even if you factor in backloading and deferments.

Plus we lose the sandwich pick we would otherwise be gaining if we sign him.

I'd be ok with this IF the plan was to put Davis in RF and Trumbo at 1B. But if they can expand the payroll this much then for God's sake go sign Fowler. Much better.....go sign them both!

Agree, much rather have Fowler than Trumbo.

Agreed.  I would much rather have Fowler at that number.

I like Trumbo and 47 homers is nothing to dismiss, but i feel like we could really improve the team, but wisely spending the 70 million elsewhere.

As for signing Trumbo and moving CD to RF, I think that makes us just okay at both spots.  When Davis is at 1B his a a plus defender..

Leave him there and find a real right fielder.

I disagree with that description of Davis' defense.  I know that Buck speaks very highly of him at 1B, so maybe I'm way out on a limb, but I think he's just OK at 1B. Good range, great arm, but only ok at scooping throws and flat out bad at fielding ground balls.

He hasn't played outfield much, and has looked bad at times when he's been out there, but I think he's shown some flashes of being able to use his athleticism and arm out there.  I really think if he was a full-time outfielder that he would end up being well above average in RF.  As good as anybody out there aside from the handful or so of newly converted CF who still have great range which there always seems to be.
