Seven schools owe fired coaches a buyout of $122 million (excluding mitigation), surpassing what's believed to be the record set in 2021 of $94M.
Fisher: $76M
Allen: $20M
Holgorsen: $15M
Babers: $4M*
Arnett: $4M
Avalos: $3M
Gonzalez: $400K

*estimate as Syracuse is private

Sources: Texas A&M is in discussions with Duke coach Mike Elko to become the next coach. Elko just informed his Duke team a decision will be made in the next 24 hours.

Middle Tennessee State fired Rick Stockstill. He had been the head coach there for 18 seasons.

Indiana has fired Tom Allen. They’ll owe him a $20.8M buyout….but they’ll always have that magical 2020 season and claim to Michael Penix.

Indiana football has bigger donors than Maryland? Great

There is a "Grumor" out there that they are willing to pony up enough to hire Jon Gruden. I'll believe that when I see it.

Mark Cuban - you've seen the commercials.  I would like to see Plank do a commercial for UMD and the B1G like that.

A UCLA source indicates Chip Kelly is likely to be fired after the USC game this weekend. They've dropped 2 straight including an ugly 17-7 loss at home to Arizona State last Sat. I forget the numbers on the extension he signed before 2022, but I seem to recall the buyout was pretty friendly from UCLA's perspective.

This very same source is now reporting Kelly will remain at UCLA.

(so expect him to be fired by the end of the day, I guess)

Multiple sources say Georgia DB coach Fran Brown is the top candidate for the Syracuse job.

Arkansas is vetting none other than Bobby Petrino to be their next offensive coordinator. The circle of life.

Just keep him away from the motorcycle dealerships in Fayetteville.

Colorado OC Sean Lewis appears to be the leading candidate for the job at San Diego State. He was previously HC at Kent State, left to join Deion, and after a hot start was infamously stripped of play-calling duties in midseason (and subsequent results made it clear play calling was not the problem).

Will be an interesting offensive transition for the Aztecs. They were very pro-style and run-heavy under Brady Hoke, and Lewis is the polar opposite.

With the transfer portal window and early HS signing period, we sure are seeing this process go faster than it used to. By my latest count, here are the changes/openings.

Boise State

Duke

Houston

Indiana

Michigan State - Jonathan Smith

Middle Tennessee

Mississippi State - Jeff Lebby

New Mexico

Northwestern - David Braun (was interim all this season)

Oregon State

San Diego State

Syracuse - Fran Brown

Texas A&M - Mike Elko

UL Monroe

UTEP

If they can continue to play the sort of defense they did under Hoke, they could quickly return to the top-tier of the MWC. With the coaching change at Syracuse, my first call would be to Rocky Long to see if he wants to come back to SD.

No question he will have the cash to do it now.
