Mississippi State defensive coordinator Zach Arnett was named interim head coach following the hospitalization, and subsequent passing, of Mike Leach. MSU confirmed the team intends to honor Leach by playing in the ReliaQuest bowl against Illinois on Jan 2. It seems only fitting the game is in a stadium that features a pirate ship behind the end zone.

SI's Ross Dellinger tweeted that MSU is expected to remove the interim label and name Arnett the permanent head coach. The hope is that it will maintain some stability during a difficult time for the program.

Do to the coaching turnover at Purdue, they are hiring Drew Brees as an interim assistant coach through the Citrus Bowl. In addition to preparing for the game, he’ll be on the sideline and is even allowed to recruit.

For now, all FBS head coach positions are filled. That has a way of changing when the NFL season ends, so stay tuned.

Jimbo Fisher is apparently breaking down and hiring Bobby Petrino as his OC and play caller. Plenty to unpack with this one, but all you really need to know is that Texas A&M now features Petrino and DJ Durkin as its two coordinators.
Oof.

Ed Reed has just been named the next head coach of Bethune-Cookman.

Turns out he won’t. Couldn’t come to a contract agreement with the school. Sounds like it was over facilities.

Kirby Smart is replacing Todd Monken with Mike Bobo as UGA's OC. I guess Kirby thought those last two championships were too easy and needed to raise the degree of difficulty. About the only positive spin you can put on Bobo's work the past several years is he inherited two mediocre offenses at S Carolina and Auburn and....well, they at least didn't get any worse.

Spoke to Ed Orgeron. There is no truth to the report that he has any interest in the Northwestern coaching job nor has he heard from anyone at Northwestern.

Michigan State has officially fired Mel Tucker. They're doing it for cause, and hoping to avoid paying out some $70M he's still owed. Expect a lawsuit over that.
Now that it's official, MSU players are eligible to enter the transfer portal over the next 30 days. There are very few landing spots at this point, but at just 4 games into the season any of them who have a redshirt available can take it now.

Iowa OC Brian Ferentz will not return to the job he never deserved in the first place after this season.

So which one of Kirk’s other kids gets the job next, James or Steven?

Don't normally address non-head coaches here, but DC Alex Grinch was finally fired at USC after they gave up 52 points and 572 yards to Washington last night. Perhaps most damning was the Huskies rushed for 316 yards, despite coming into the game with just the 117th ranked rushing offense.
So along with the announcement that Brian Ferentz won't be back at Iowa next season, college football will be without its worst OC and DC next year....unless someone out there is crazy enough to hire them both. [cringe]
Final Thought: Wanna know how bad USC's defense was last night? 263 of Washington's 316 rushing yards came from RB Dillon Johnson (who had never had a 100-yard game before). Of Johnson's 263 yards, 199 of them came before first contact. That's guys not knowing what gaps they're supposed to fill - and that, in the ninth game of the season, is just plain bad coaching.
