Hawaii won’t be running in back with June Jones. Despite expressing interest in returning as HC, Jones has apparently turned down an offer.

More clarity has emerged on this. The issue was Hawaii wanted a clear succession plan after Jones, who is 68, left after 2-3 seasons. They wanted Jones to hire former QB Timmy Chang and groom him to take over. Jones likes Chang, but he wants full control over who is on his staff. Sounds like the door is still open for them to reach some sort of agreement.

(this info comes from Pete Thamel, who sourced it from Leigh Steinberg)

Hawaii just hit fast-forward and hired Timmy Chang. He was the guy they wanted long term, but wanted him to spend a couple seasons under Jones first.

An ASU update....DC Antonio Pierce, the man at the center of the dead period recruiting investigation, announced he's resigning. He's the 5th ASU coach to resign or be fired in the wake of the scandal, including both coordinators. Have to start wondering how long Herm Edwards can last, even with a staunch ally like Ray Anderson as AD.

Pause the carousel, Jim Harbaugh says he's staying at Michigan.

Rumors going around that Bryan Harsin may be fired at Auburn for some…extracurricular activities with a staff member who isn’t his wife.

That’ll be the excuse, but really the mass exodus of players and asst coaches is probably what’s sounding the alarm bells.

I still think they made a mistake letting Malzahn go. Yeah, he only went 3-5 against Alabama. But you know what? During his 8 seasons the ENTIRE rest of the SEC won the same number of games against them that Gus did.

Miami is hiring Michigan OC Josh Gattis for the same position.

Jim Harbaugh’s flirtation with the NFL may end up costing him a good chunk of his staff.

Update: In a leaked text that Gattis sent to his players at Michigan, it sounds like his issue was with the UM administration more than Harbaugh’s situation. Wondering if things reached the point where Gattis wanted to be in line as Jim’s successor and UM said they preferred to look elsewhere.

The situation at Auburn just gets weirder by the day.

So to sum up, the university is investigating Bryan Harsin's impact on the football program, all while Harsin is in some tropical locale with his family on a pre-planned vacation. The school wants him to come back and cooperate with the investigation. Harsin apparently isn't keen on that. So the school released a memo outlining a policy that compells employees to cooperate as terms of their employment, and the effective date of said policy is literally Feb 8, 2022.

So basically, Auburn is pulling out all the stops to invent a reason to fire him for cause....meaning they won't have to pay him the buyout on his contract. Considering how much they still have to pay Gus Malzahn and his assistants to not coach there, I get it. Still a bad look though.

Could be good practice for whenever the Bruce Pearl love fest comes crashing down, which does seem somewhat inevitable given his track record.

Per Pete Thamel, Auburn is expected to announce Bryan Harsin will remain as head coach. Gonna be some awkward times on the Plains….it’s tough to walk back when you come as close to the edge of firing someone as they did.

According to Football Scoop, Hue Jackson is looking to hire Art Briles as his OC at Grambling State. If this is true, it's just bad on multiple levels.

His final game came against Clay Helton, who was fired as the USC coach one year ago to the day. Maybe Frost will catch on with a Sun Belt team, and go get some other Power 5 coach fired after Week 2 of 2023.

He might go somewhere and have success again. He was certainly well regarded at Oregon as the OC, and then at UCF.

I tend to believe that good coaches can fail simply because they aren't the right match for a particular school. It would seem weird for that to be the case with Frost at Nebraska, but maybe he simply put too much pressure on himself to live up to expectations and his own legacy, and his teams fed off that. That said, he needs to be more detail-focused if/when he gets another shot. Maybe a year or two at the Saban Rehabilitation Clinic would do him well.

Joseph is now the first black head coach of any sport in Nebraska athletics history. That’s certainly…something.
