Just read the rule.

I had never heard it the way IG stated it...heard it the actual way stated in the rule book several times.

Yeah mine was just a shorthand way to explain it. I've always thought about it in in runs:outs left ratio if its an inning or less.

Yeah if you're up by 2, then the tying run is on deck, so you can get a 1 or 2 out save.

I think we've seen Britton get a one pitch, one out save with a 5 run lead before, which is the biggest the lead can be for that short of a save.

Fair enough about the save rule. In all fairness, Gary Thorne called it a save situation, and Donnie Hart there in the postgame alluded Britton getting a save...so even they don't know the rules apparently.

I knew you couldn't pitch your way into a save situation. But I thought entering with three run lead or less was it. Plus the tying run on deck/at the plate part.

Save rule: enter the 9th up 3 or less. Or enter the game with the tying run on deck or pitch the final three innings of a game while not relinquishing the lead.

The bullpen would still be a strength if we only needed it to pitch 13-15 innings each time through the rotation. We lost the depth to cover 4 innings a night when O'Day went down and Brach started slipping a bit.

In each situation you obviously have to be the last pitcher to pitch and you cannot win a game and record a save

You need the full MLB rule, not the google search:

Saves:
Rule 10.20 in the Official Rule Book states:
Credit a pitcher with a save when he meets all three of the following conditions:
(1) He is the finishing pitcher in a game won by his club; and
(2) He is not the winning pitcher; and
(3) He qualifies under one of the following conditions:
- (a) He enters the game with a lead of no more than three runs and pitches for at least one inning; or
- (b) He enters the game, regardless of the count, with the potential tying run either on base, or at bat, or on deck (that is, the potential tying run is either already on base or is one of the first two batsmen he faces; or
- © He pitches effectively for at least three innings. No more than one save may be credited in each game.

Of course Thorne doesn't know the rule.

Yeah I heard Thorne make the mistake and wasn't that surprised. Was surprised it was contentious in here.

I'm still fucking pissed that the ninth inning was anything close to that. Fucking ridiculous.

I watched the end of the Rays game. Leadoff out. Then a double. Then a routine grounder to first. First baseman underhanded a toss to the pitcher covering. Easy out. Except the pitcher dropped the ball. So the Rays runner who had moved from second to third tried to score. But was thrown out at home. Except the catcher dropped the ball.

BWAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!
