... and... by 1958, they'd turned it into this... the Packard Hawk...
ps: This was not the fault of either Studebaker or Packard... both of which are historic brands.... it was some conglomerate who bought them, merged them, and then shuttered them to take the tax loss...

IMO, the main reason they're ugly is because every one you see is rusted all to hell....they saved weight via thinner metal, which is fine, but they hadn't figured out to dip the body and fenders in zinc first... so, they rusted like old Fiats used to...
But the design was quite good... it was a game changer for having a big American 4-door sedan be big on the inside but distinctly un-big on the outside... it's gotta be one of the most efficient packaging of any car design.. my folks had one and I moved a large washing machine in it...
And without the rust, it doesn't look bad... if anything, it's kinda clean and crisp for 1980... I think it was a case of very good design being defeated by lousy implementation...
