No, he's really not.

IMO, he's not someone you want starting for you... even when rebuilding, but he can definitely help a team in a swing man capacity.

His stuff was better than advertised, even if didn't generate a lot of k's or swing and misses.


He's more JAG (just a guy) vs. anything else... but he's not terrible.  He's usable.

Yea, I agree with this.   He showed some improvement at years end.   Frankly there are a few young pitchers from this past year, that need a mulligan.  Hess is one of them.  Coming up to the majors for the first time, playing on a team that was losing every night,  not hitting and playing atrocious defense, had to be over whelming.

I think Hess, can contribute in the right situation.  In addition, young players generally get better.

His FIP was almost 6.  Gives up a ton of homers, very few Ks, throws strikes below a league average level.  He actually missed bats around a league average level for a starter.  He really does nothing good.  MAYBE, if he is used for 2-3 innings at a time, you see better stuff and a more usable piece.  Right now, he's AAAA cannon fodder at this level.

He is worth keeping around and giving a chance.   Young players, especially pitchers have a lot to learn.  Hess does not have great stuff, but he is not a junk ball guy either.  Players do improve with experience.  Only on message boards,  do guys get written off after 103 innings.   Hess only had 45 innings  above AAA when he was recalled so there is a chance he figures it out.

Why do you put Scott with the other two? His stuff is filthy. He will continue to have job long term. If he finds control, can be elite.

Hess and Yacabonis will always be fringe guys. Not guys you really want starting...but could help a bullpen for 2-3 innings, especially while cheap.

Thought his breaking ball (slider) really improved in the second half. The eephus CB he has isn't gonna cut it. 4 seaner is pretty decent and it seams he has the ability and confidence to work all 4 quadrants with it. Just gonna have to command it better. Basically a 2 pitch SP, which is  concerning, but could be ok with better command and eventualldevelopment/use of a CH. Not crazy about him, but could be a decent BOR guy.  ....or a very good RP. if that fails

Yep, his slider was pretty good in the second half. We will see.

The thing that we are missing is Hess seems to be improving.  

He finished strong last year, and with the exception of one disastrous outing, had a very good spring.  His last 10 big league outings, have resulted in an ERA under 3 and a 1.08 whip.  He is making progress.

 

The only way this season proves better than we all think is if a couple of the young starting pitchers, step up and have good seasons.  Hopefully Hess is taking the first steps.

He's a SP on a bad team. Might be a decent #5 on a good one. Still better than a lot of the drek we threw out there when we were competitive.

 

I liked what I saw last night. The K's were impressive.
