Looking at the recruits, it looks to me like Maryland did great in the state of Florida.

I think 5 DB's alone from Florida.  Hopefully they have a good experience in College Park.

It will be good if Maryland eventually locks down the home area, but becoming a presence in Florida and the south may pay greater dividends.

They did good in Florida this time, but like I said before I wouldn't rely too heavily on it in the near future. While there's a ton of talent there, there's also a ton of competition. Durkin had the benefit of building relationships with kids back when he was selling Michigan, or maybe even when he was still at Florida. Now that he's selling MD, he might not be able to open nearly as many doors down there. At least not until (if) he gets the program on the map (and the new Cole should help some too). The primary focus will always need to be on the home turf.

While it is great to get the local guys you have to pull from the real football states to compete. I know many will not like it but the truth is the kids from Florida, Tx, GA are far more developed and face a much higher level of competition during their HS careers.

Agreed, it is important to get the 4 and 5 star guys in your backyard, but in a few short months DD has made inroads into the southern States.

Those inroads already existed I'm sure. That was one of his pluses as a candidate... a history of great recruiting from all over the country but definitely Florida. It'll be interesting to see how well he can maintain that at MD.

If you actually develop a great program more of those elite guys will be in play, until then you have to hope some of those guys are emotionally invested or are me guys, IMHO. The building of a great program is not going to be done without the players from the power states. The top guys really only become available after several years of making the right moves on guys 3-25.

Andrew will have a review of the class tomorrow, and Zack will have an updated depth chart Friday.

Not sure if anyone caught it, but Durkin was on with the clueless one Steve Davis on the fan this morning, and Durkin said twice, he expects to make Florida his second home.  Paraphrasing him, he said that there were people (coaches) who he trusts and also people who trust him and his staff.

He will eventually get more local kids if Maryland steps out of the cellar, and when he becomes better known around the local programs, including Baltimore, but raiding the southern states is not a bad plan.

Two funny notes from the interview.  He was asked, what he thought of his old boss's celebrity party at Michigan's signing day.  He chuckled and said it was "interesting" and looked fun but he was a blue collar guy and Maryland was a Blue collar program.

Translation, don't expect  John Harbs, Derek Jeter, or Tom Brady type people at Maryland any time soon.

Then Davis asked him who he liked in the Super Bowl.  There was a pause, and finally said something about if it is Manning's last game, he would like to see him win.  Davis said, "You have not thought much about the SB?"  He said "Yeah, kind of had to remember who was playing."

He has been busy.. I .loved that last answer.

This what I've been saying. Go recruit where the talent is. Glad he is making that a priority.

I'm very very excited to see what this staff can do when they have a full year to recruit.  They still ended up with a pretty good class (for them) in the face of a major shake up in the program.

Yeah, it's telling that it's hard to tell the difference in quality between a class the Durkin had a month to recruit and a typical Edsall class.

No idea what the best services are for judging rankings, but just to pick one that's easy to search backwards by year, Rivals has Maryland 40th this year.

2015 they were ranked 54

2014 they were ranked 53

2013 they were ranked 33

2012 they were ranked 35

2011 they were ranked 43

Yeah, we've had this basic discussion before in terms of Edsall recruiting vs. Friedgen. Edsall was supposed to do so much more, and never did.

Usually these services are pretty close to each other. 247 Sports had them at #42, while ESPN had them at #43. The one outlier was Scout, who only had them at #53.

So, is it all settled now?  (except for which guys don't pass academic muster...)

As far as recruits out of HS, yes. Now the question is how many of the current players with eligibility left transfer out, or leave by other means (bad grades, etc). We might not hear much about that until spring practice, when the reality of the change hits some of them and they don't think they fit.

They could aways get a transfer or two themselves as well.

If some HS kid wants to change his mind now, what happens?

Depends if the school lets him out of his LOI

So there is a company in North Carolina called Heritage Farms Cheshire Pork that makes these shirts. They do one with the pig/flag for each of the SE states. They apparently have no idea why they have suddenly seen a huge jump in orders for Maryland.
