Wow.

I wonder what MLB is allowed to do in terms of punishment if this ends up being true.  Sounds really bad.

@NYTSports: BREAKING: FBI investigating St. Louis Cardinals for hacking Astros. @NYTSports exclusive. http://t.co/qlmQmhRq2j

Whoa. Sounds like they didn't think that one through. Seems like they acted when upset instead of acting smart. It should have been easy-peasy to at least ensure that it was hard to trace.

And the Astros were really stupid. He reused the same passwords!?!?!? I bet they don't even know they were hacked if their records weren't released to Deadspin.

For starters, people will go to jail if proven.

If it wasn't just a rogue employee, I'd imagine that they'd lose their top draft pick for something like the next ten years. If it can be proven that the owner knew about it then he'll probably be forced to sell.

That would please those fans that find the Cardinals and, in particular, their fans arrogant and obnoxious (I'm not one of them, however).

@craigcalcaterra: Cardinals hackers politely and respectfully applaud when other hackers hack their system.

It sounds like this wasn't exactly a sophisticated job. Some people in the Cardinals organization wondered if Luhnow took anything proprietary with him, checked to see if his passwords changed (they hadn't, which ought to get him made fun of worse than anything in the three terrible seasons the 'Stros had), and went snooping.

Craig Calcaterra seems to think that they could prosecute under federal hacking laws, which pretty much means bad things for anyone connected. Somebody is probably going to jail. As for MLB, Calcaterra also compared Bill DeWitt and the Cardinals' relationship with Rob Manfreid to the Patriots and Roger Goodell, so this could be interesting to see where the punishment falls in the end.

From ESPN:

ESPN legal analyst Roger Cossack thinks that the Cardinals' information hacking of the Astros was not a one-time thing: "I think this was a plan and I think when this comes out you're going to find out that this was done not just once, but several times. I think you are going to find out it was done over a period of time. This is very serious." (via Mike & Mike)

Not sure what Cossack is basing this off of. But if this really is a repeated, intentional hacking, the Cardinals are in deep. That's one way to go onto a new regime... if your GM and his underlings are locked up... Just crazy.

Cossack's a lawyer and not a reporter.  This has about as much credibility in terms of an accusation as if Jalen Rose claimed it.

If Cossack was talking about what the legal ramifications could be if found guilty, then he's a super well-informed guy with a valuable opinion.  But this is meaningless, or rather, as meaningful as the opinion of any talking head without insight into the actual situation.

Right, that's why I said I don't know what he's basing it on. He normally doesn't opine quite like that. My guess is he has some connection with someone in the Astros camp, possibly. It's not like him to speculate to that degree.

FBI: Cardinals accessed Astros' database as early as 2012, more than one or two times

So...yeah. This is going to get interesting.

Hacking is just modern day "breaking and entering"... and if you steal from a bank or steal secrets from the gov't, they're already covered by ample laws too... so those pre-hacking laws should do just fine, we don't need more...

But those laws won't do.... if hacking doesn't already have worse penalties than rape, it will soon... because mega-corps and the gov't don't worry about getting raped, but they do worry about some nerd breaking-and-entering into their systems... which means the penalty for B&E-by-computer will eclipse that for traditional B&E by about a zillion...

So, the clubs aren't s'posed to sue each other, but rather leave it up to the Commish... who can fine a club a max of $2M... and can take away things like draft choices... but can he take draft choices away from STL and give them to HOU?

EDIT:  Also... if he can fine a club a max of $2M, I wonder if that means he can fine them that much for each instance?

That can't be good for anyone in that organization right now.

The Cardinals just signed an extension with Fox for its media deal. The deal was start in 2018 and starts at $55M. Presuming that it has an interest rate of 3.5%, it would be for 15 years and $1.04 billion.

It's hard to project what MASN will offer in future years because we don't know how their rights fee will change. But it's reasonable to presume that MASN is offering roughly $200-250 million over the 15 year period more than what the Cardinals are receiving.

The Nationals request, using the most reasonable application of their previous logic, would force MASN to pay roughly $2.77B more than what the Cardinals are receiving, or easily more than 3 times the actual amount.

Well, there's certainly a helluva lot more Cards fans than Gnats fans... but do we know how many subscribers are involved in the Cards-Fox-RSN vs alleged Gnats territory?

Alleged Nationals territory? Their media territory is well defined.

MASN has more subscribers than FSM (Fox Sports Midwest) including a larger core area. I do suspect that fans in Memphis for example pay more to watch the Cardinals then fans in North Carolina pay to watch the Nationals/Orioles.

The question is how does the Cardinals smaller territory compare to the Nationals larger territory given that it's shared by two clubs. Presumably, the Orioles and Nationals only receive maybe 70 or 80 percent of what they would have received if the other team didn't exist.

That was a poorly worded reference to the idea that everybody around StL watches the Cards, but not many people in the O's side of MASN-stan watch the Gnats...

The best organization in the sport is really struggling. The Pirates are only 2.5 out now. They have cut 5-6 games off the lead in recent weeks.
