So in 2003, the year where Jay Gibbons was the MVO and Andre Agassi won the Australian Open, Federer won Wimbledon for the first time.  Counting from 2003 Wimbledon to 2019 Wimbledon, there have been 65 majors played.  Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic have won 54 of them.

Let me simply point out two matches:

 

In 2016, Andy Murray beat Milos Raonic in straight sets to win Wimbledon.

 

In 2014, Marin Čilić beat Kei Nishikori in straight sets to win the U.S. Open.

 

What do those two matches have to do with anything? Those are the only two grand slam finals since 2005 — the ONLY TWO IN FOURTEEN YEARS going back to when YouTube was created — that did not include Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

 

This is so mind-boggling it barely registers. Fed, Rafa or Nole played in 57 of the last 59 grand slam finals.

 

Two of them matched up in 22 of those finals.

 

This is impossible. And, at the same time, it is also so self-evident that we already know this.

Worst tennis I've seen Roger play in.... I don't know.  I mean I think this was worse than against Millman last year.  And before that , probably over a decade.  Injury I'm sure is part of it as Rob mentioned.  In any case there's only one of the big 3 still standing right now.  Great opportunity for Rafa to win #19 and close the Grand Slam gap to 1.  And rack up more weeks ranked #1 as well if Djokovic is out for awhile.  But of course with Rafa an injury could be out of the corner, especially on the HC's that put the most stress on his knees.  He has scheduled less events to play in this year and is playing more offensive tennis, so that may help.  We'll just have to wait and see.

So Nadal won number 19.  4 PM on a Sunday afternoon was not a good time for me so I missed most of this.  I actually forgot about the match in the evening and checked on it around 830 or so to see who won, I was surprised to see that Medvedev had battled back to force a 5th set.   I caught the last couple of games of the match Medvedev really made Rafa work for it.

 

Obviously health will be a big key, but you have to think there's a good chance that Nadal gets at least one more (most likely a French) and equals Feds.   I'm not sure how it shakes out, but I kind of like the idea of seeing all 3 finish at 20 and then the next generation comes along and starts winning some titles.

Assuming health, Nadal wins the French next year in all likelihood to tie Federer.  Nadal is always terrible in Australia, so I doubt he wins that.  Fed could but I tend to think he is done winning majors.  The injuries for Fed could start to mount but I am just not sure if he will continue to give a great effort for 2 weeks.

His last chance may have been Wimbledon when he had multiple championship points.  I suppose as long as he is healthy, he will always have a chance, especially at Wimbledon, but I think he is done.

 

Novak will end up with the most wins I believe.

 

The debate is interesting on who the GOAT is regardless of the major wins.
