This is another band where I have a basic knowledge. I know all the commercial hits and some other songs, but not too much.

Good starting points?

Fair question, my opinion is that if "Stand" and or "Shiny Happy People" are the commercial hits you know the best, that is a bad thing..

If "Losing My Religion", "What's the Frequency Kenneth", and "It's the End of the World" are the songs, then you're good!

in my opinion of course.

"Murmur"
"Document"
"Automatic For the People"
"Monster"
"New Adventures in Hi-Fi"

Listen to all of them all the way through.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Yep, know all those, and the awesome song (Don't Go Back to) Rockville.

"New Adventures in Hi-Fi"

Awesome, thanks. I know I've listened to a few...but not all the way through, I don't think.

I said in this thread that "New Adventures" is my favorite record of theirs, and it is, but it's not their most accessible. "Monster" might be the best bet for accessibility, it's also highly underrated.

That's their first record ever so it's very very raw and the production ain't that great.

Still, it's an unreal record.

Seth, I think we are doing an amazing job promoting REM on this website. They should hire us, or something.

Definitely raw...with shoddy production.

4 in, but I'm digging it. They definitely have their own, recognizable, defining sound.

Let's forward this to their fan site..By the way, murmurs.com was an REM board that i used to be quite active on,but haven't been in years. I wonder if it's still around.

One day, we should do a top 25 favorite REM songs list or something...

when Coker and Ricker get through everything maybe.

I'm getting there. I absolutely LOVE New Adventures, Murmur and Reckoning so far. Still not familiar enough overall to contribute to a top 25 though.

Really tough for sure..

You'd have to at least be familiar with the whole catalog.

Yea, I think it's pretty clear that I take this waaaaaaaaaay too seriously.

My friend Antoine (The Epic on OH & here) and I always do "top 5 lists" of literally every category imaginable. Pretty sad.. ;)

Bumping this.

Been on *another* REM kick lately (as I should considering they're one of my 3 favorite bands ever) and I realized that they may be the only band, ever, to release 10(!) straight very good to great records.

Can the Beatles even match that?

From Murmur to New Adventures in Hi-Fi they didn't have a single dud. Very impressive.

Their older stuff is WAY better than the newer.

After Document it becomes more radio-hit to me.

Murmur to Document R.E.M. is great to me and I love listening to it. In fact I was on a Murmur kick the past month. But after Document I like R.E.M. a lot less, even though they are still good.

Their rarities and B-sides are absolutely golden though. Dead Letter Office is awesome!

And yea, that sounded SO hipster, but whatever

In would argue that "Up" and "Reveal" would be great records if they were any other band..My expectations were too high after Bill Berry left.

Just "Stand" & "Everybody Hurts" seem like pure radio friendly hits...Oh, "Shiny Happy People" too, there's just no excuse for that one.

This is one of my 5 favorite bands ever. If you're my friend on Spotify you probably know I've been listening to these guys a ton again lately, and I think I'm ready to dub "New Adventures in Hi-Fi" my favorite album of theirs. I didn't think it was possible, but here we are. My top 5:

1) New Adventures in Hi-Fi
2) Document
3) Monster
4) Automatic for the People*
5) Murmur

*For the longest time I thought this was their best. My re-listening has changed my thoughts. Full disclosure, I change my favorite albums of bands all the time.

Once again it's changed lol.

1) New Adventures in Hi-Fi
2) Out of Time (mad props on the promotion!)
3) Murmur
4) Document
5) Monster
6) Reckoning
7) Automatic for the People
8) Green
9) Fables of the Reconstruction
10) Life's Rich Pageant

Interesting how "Automatic" keeps sinking. I doubt it goes any lower though.

That is interesting...

I'd go:

Reckoning

Pageant

Fables

New Adventures

Document

Mine changes too all the time.

"Letter Never Sent" off of Reckoning is my current song of the moment..

"It's been pretty simple so far, vacation in Athens is calling me
And knock knock knock on wood I thought I'd left you behind"
