So I saw this thread today at work and decided to listen to the "In Time: The Best of R.E.M. 1988-2003" album that I downloaded a while ago to see if I could get into them. I have to say, I was pleased.

It's a short commute, so I only got 4 songs in:
Man on the Moon - Of course I've heard this before, very good song
Everybody Hurts - Classic
Bad Day - Liked it
Stand - Liked it

This is the track list from that album - http://en.wikipedia.... ... ck_listing

Any other must listen songs I should look into? Or should I just get all of their albums and be done with it? (I am hesitant to get full albums of a band that's been around a long time because it's such a tall task to tackle them all)

Tackle 'em all, there's no rush.

And just looked at the album, I obviously know and really enjoy ''. But I believe that's the only song I've ever heard off of it.

Do you all know the origin of "what's the frequency, Kenneth"?

"Kenneth, what is the frequency?"
On October 4, 1986, as Dan Rather was walking along Park Avenue in Manhattan to his apartment, he was attacked and punched from behind by a man who demanded to know, "Kenneth, what is the frequency?", while a second assailant also chased and beat him. As the assailant pummeled and kicked Rather, he kept repeating the question over and over again. In describing the incident, Rather said, "I got mugged. Who understands these things? I didn't and I don't now. I didn't make a lot of it at the time and I don't now. I wish I knew who did it and why, but I have no idea."

I echo this. If you like the milder stuff, check out "Automatic" and "Out of Time". More rocking, try "Monster." "New Adventures in Hi Fi" provides a solid mixture of both.

There is baseball, and occasionally there are other things of note

"Now OPS sucks.  Got it."

"Making his own olive brine is peak Mackus."

"I'm too hungover to watch a loss." - McNulty

Exactly, just enjoy it all. I'd even go in order, you'll hear how much they changed from 1982.

Good stuff all around!

Gotcha - That's what I'll do then. Thanks Pedro and Seth for the feedback.

I really enjoyed Murmur this morning. "Sitting Still" was quite enjoyable.

I just started listening to Reckoning, so "Pretty Persuasion" should be coming up soon.

Seth and I disagree on this, but if you're enjoying their earlier stuff, you have no idea what's in store for you.

Yea, we disagree, but I won't take anything away from "Automatic", "Monster", or "New Adventures".

The more recent stuff though, um, well...

Thanks for the bump. I gave this album a listen for the first time today in my office and it is amazing. I still haven't gotten to all of their albums yet, but I'm a new, big fan. Love it.

Went out of town for a few days, but drove seperately from my wife & kids (I left a day early to get back to the office), anyhow, decided to listen to a few of the "newer" CD's, and I have to say that I enjoyed them a bit more, especially "Reveal".

I threw New Adventures in as well, and I'm with Pedro, it's still terrific.

Decided to spin "Out of Time" today. Very underrated. Not top 5, but still real good.

Maybe my favorite track from that album

This is another band where I have a basic knowledge. I know all the commercial hits and some other songs, but not too much.

Good starting points?

"Country Feedback" is my faovrite song on that record, and Michael's favorite in the entire REM catalog.
