However, while we both agree that spending a lot is far from always being a good idea, would you not also agree that spending a lot generally helps the team in the short-term?
Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't... just look at the new-team experience of Pujols, Hamilton and Fielder... there are examples of teams buying flags, and there are examples of teams spending a fortune and not even coming close... it goes both ways to the point where I wouldn't bet on spending vs. not-spending telling you much that's trustworthy... and dropping the O's to middle of the pack was stupid...

Well I'd feel better about the O's chances right now if they had Max Scherzer, Jason Hayward, and Andrew Miller. Wouldn't you? That doesn't mean they would have been good long-term moves, but that's a separate conversation. Yes, sometimes moves backfire, even immediately, but in general, spending helps gain results in the short-term even if it may ultimately hurt the franchise in the long-term.

Agree with Seth. I'm leaning Seattle right now as my AL favorite.

Sports on Earth: Baseball's new landscape for GMs
Main message: having 2 WC's means GM's are no longer aiming to build teams that are very, very good... being just pretty-good is the new target...

Sweetspot: Baseball's $400 million problem
Too much money is at stake for baseball not to do more. And rather then making this a team-by-team issue, where teams try and find a market inefficiency in pitcher health, baseball should develop a central program for research and development into injuries, with results available to all 30 teams.
