Angelos can afford Scherzer, Duquette cannot.

No.

I think some folks here might be a lot happier as Red Sox or MFY fans...

You mean organizations that are committed to winning? Yea, who the hell wants that?

If you spend the off season hoping for megabuck FA contracts, you're just jerking yourself off... (so to speak)...

One thing I will say is that I am wondering if we are sitting back and end up pouncing in a big fish.

Yep....that's exactly what we're doing...;-)

Bunch of wussies in this thread. Rshack has testicles made of diamonds. Maybe he can donate a diamond ball to the Orioles so we can extend David Lough.

Hello?  Back when the Orioles were good all the time, they did it with half the MFY's payroll all the time.  The *only* time the O's were good by writing checks was the 2 years PA bought a roster... and we saw how sustainable that was...

You gotta think long term, and you guys are just saying "Gimme gimme" about next year... be careful what you wish for... because the last time the O's spent a fortune, the goodness lasted 2 measly seasons and led to 15 years of suckitude...

What Buck and DD are doing is the *only* thing that's worked in forever... so, of course, you brain surgeons just know it's wrong...

It's not a matter of balls, it's a matter of not being stupid...

Back when the Orioles were good all the time they were great at drafting and developing talent.  We haven't really seen that be the case in the past couple decades with very few exceptions.

And, there is no reason you can't be good at drafting and developing talent and be able to add big time free agents when you have a need and the acquisition makes sense.  There is no reason the two need to be mutually exclusive.

We need to be better at drafting and developing players.  We also need to be willing (we're clearly able) to sign a premium free agent or two when the timing is right.  Signing Scherzer would in no way prevent the Orioles from doing the things you want them to do.  It would prevent Angelos from doing the things he wants to do, as he continues to prioritize profit margin over winning.  Not saying he doesn't care if we win or lose, just that he's not shown he is particularly willing to cut his profits down, or contribute his MASN profits, in order to give the MLB squad a better chance at winning.

How many rings did the O's win when PA was writing fat checks and buying a roster?

Those Orioles were also willing to make the pre-1976 equivalent of signing the premium free agent: the blockbuster trade. They brought in Frank Robinson, and Mike Cuellar, and Reggie Jackson.

They certainly did better during that era than they did when he wasn't writing fat checks and buying a roster.  We had no farm system that entire time, we won some games when he was spending money, we were laughingstocks when he wasn't.

We've drafted and acquired via trade some solid talent over the past 5 years, and we've established that into some significant MLB players, and some of those significant guys were bought to play here (Markakis, Hardy, Jones all guys we went out and bought, unless you think paying them to stay is completely different than paying them to come).  We're not spending as much as we could (or relatively as much as we were in the mid-90s), but the farm system is better, so we're about equal in terms how well we're doing.

If we spent more (not indescriminantly) and kept up the player development, we'd be even better.

The only big-deal trade was Frank.

Cuellar was way more of a steal than Frank was... nobody (and I mean nobody... except the O's scout) realized who Cuellar was about to be.  If the O's made a trade like that now, trading a young 22hr guy for a nobody un-young SP with Cuellar's non-record, you guys would be raising royal hell...

The Reggie trade was before they realized what FA was.... it was right when FA was about to start, and they were relying on the fact that nobody who was an Oriole wanted to leave... but then FA actually happened and both Reggie and Grich taught them the hard way that (some) guys were happy to leave for the money... Palmer wasn't, but Grich and Reggie were....

We either need to build it, buy it, or get lucky.  Lately we're getting lucky.

Isn't there another game where we screw one, marry one, and kill one?  ;-)
