Cincinnati and UCF are the odds-on favorites. Makes sense. UConn will likely miss out again... can't even beat out Cincy and UCF. 

I think Memphis is the favorite personally. While UCF gets you into Florida, which is highly appealing, Memphis is a recruiting hotbed, is a decent media market, and has the basketball resume. If they continue their football success lately, they'd be a shoe in. Plus it helps connect the conference to West Virginia more.

Either way, I see the Big 12 expanding sooner rather than later.

Setting geography aside, UCF makes a lot more sense to me than Memphis.

Hard to say, though I imagine they were quite serious at some point. Both schools were and still would be great additions to any conference; though that point appears moot with the Grant of Rights.

If the Big Ten wanted to expand again, those would be the top choices not named Notre Dame. Never heard if they actually inquired about the possibility though. But when you heard the reasons why they chose MD and Rutgers, they obviously want to look to the south.

Apparently Bowlsby said the ACC could take advantage of this by going to a 3 division structure, which would imply that Notre Dame would have an even closer relationship with the conference for football, if not a "regular" member. I don't see it happening though....even with ND as a full member 3 divisions sounds messy.

 

This is definitely bad news for Cincinnati, BYU, UCF, etc. though, who won't be getting that Big 12 invite in the mailbox anytime soon.

The Big 12, however, has one luxury at its disposal: time. The granting of rights slowed the realignment wheel enough for the Big 12 to meticulously weigh its expansion options.

 

Ten years ago, TCU didn’t have the look of a viable Big 12 expansion candidate. It ranked 74th in attendance, well behind the likes of Memphis, Fresno State and East Carolina. But behind a visionary leadership from its chancellors, athletic directors and coach Gary Patterson, the Horned Frogs forced Big 12 inclusion.

 

Today, the Big 12’s expansion options don’t look so hot. But five years from now, who knows?

 

Colorado State is building a $200 million stadium. Memphis will soon be adding new football and basketball facilities. Houston hired one of the budding stars in coaching in Tom Herman.

 

If the Big 12 expanded now, its options would be limited. By holding off, it can wait to see if another TCU develops. Or, in a home-run scenario, a rift could develop in another Power 5 conference. (It’s happened before; just ask Dan Beebe.)

It will be UC and one other. They should have added Louisville when they had the chance to really build a nice bridge to WVU.

I was actually talking about Cincinnati as they are upgrading both basketball and football facilities.

But yes, I think the Big 12 could definitely nab both Florida schools. I like that idea a lot.

if they focus on schools that are named for just portions of a state instead of the whole state, they're keeping their status down long-term...  when was the last time a portion-of-the-state school actually had any sustained status?
