Actually they will stay large.  Inn fact they will go to 16 teams.  When that happens a conf can elect to leave the NCAA.  I see at least 5 major 16 team conferences.  Then they can make their own tournies and keep all the money.  They don't need to share money to small schools.  Also they can be rid of the NCAA rules bodies.

Don't hold your breath... it took them a million years just to get a measly 1-game championship game... because they were afraid of the dang Rose Bowl... and Sugar Bowl... and etc., etc.

Sixteen team conferences are too unwieldy... of course, we'll hear all manner of prognostication about it... just like we heard for years that six 12-team conferences (including the Big East) were gonna rule college football and squeeze everybody else out...  that didn't happen either, but there were lots of columns about it...

So a 16-team Big Ten that includes Virginia and UNC? I think Jim Deleny is somewhere right now reading that and touching himself.

Why do you think the NCAA made concessions to the big schools?  It is bc they don't want to lose them.  They can make it work.

I don't see UNC and UVA.  They already have the DC market.  I can see BC and I think they will make a final run at ND.

Cincinnati Enquirer: Nippert expansion possible if UC joins Big 12

Nippert Stadium could receive another major expansion if the University of Cincinnati joins the Big 12 Conference, school President Santa Ono told The Enquirer on Monday.

Ono opened up more about UC's outlook if it were to join the Power 5 Conference a day after The Enquirer reported that he has led efforts to position the school to jump to the Big 12.

Ono reiterated he is confident that UC is an attractive expansion candidate.

"I do know (Big 12 leaders) think extremely highly of the University of Cincinnati," Ono said. "I would not say there was a reason to be optimistic if I didn't feel that way."

The Enquirer on Sunday reported findings from a public records request that showed Ono has been in contact and met with Big 12 leaders over the past 16 months. In one email obtained by The Enquirer, former Kansas State President Jon Wefald suggested to Ono that UC would have to take a "financial haircut" in order to join the Big 12, which K-State and Wefald helped launch in the mid-1990s.

The Cincinnati Enquirer has been pimping UC to the Big 12 for months now.

Not sure if they're getting good leads from UC people or if they're being told to put pressure on the Big 12?

Just an odd scenario as a lot of this has been out in public. Then you look at a few years ago with MD going to the Big Ten and it came (relatively) out of nowhere.

Idaho, NMSU out as Sun Belt members after 2017

Both were football-only members. The article says Idaho probably drops to FCS and New Mexico State goes independent.

Boise State was planning on joining the Big East once upon a time.

Just change the conference name to Cross Country and the divisions of East and West will have real meaning.

Testudo Times: B1G Expansion Primer of Rumors and Facts

Well, it's been 3-4 years since we've had major realignment, so I guess it's time for the rumor mills to get rolling.

Interesting. I'd certainly disagree with the notion that ESPN is losing money.  Maybe not currently maximizing revenues, but that's not the same.

Lot of logical arguments, but that passed on rumor is hard to imagine happening. Do think there would have to be that type of mass departure for it to work though.

What they might have meant was that ESPN's revenues have been declining, due to subscriber loss, which has been the case over the past year or so. But yeah, they are not in the red.

As for the overall rumor of another major shift, sounds far-fetched to me at this time.

Yeah, I agree that I don't see a major shift anytime soon.

UVA, UNC, dook, FSU, GaTech, Notre Dame all to the Big 10 would be absurd.

If that happens (and I really don't see it occurring), that has to be a win for Maryland fans. Odds are that the Big Ten would make East and West divisions, which is basically the old ACC (east) and the old Big Ten (west).

Wake Forest would be left on an island in that scenario.

He was calling for four 5 team pods.

I would guess:
FSU
GaTech
dook
UNC
UVA

MD
Rutgers
PSU
OSU
Michigan

Sparty
ND
Indiana
Purdue
Illinois

NW
Wisky
Iowa
Minnesota
Nebraska
