If a good but not great player like Harper gets $330 million, what will Mike Trout get?

This doesn't seem like as good of a deal ad Machado got.

It's barely over a $25MM average, and there's no opt out.  Boras isn't the master agent he like to pretend to be.

Well, it's also the biggest contract in the history of MLB, so there's that.

If the NL adopts the DH in the next 5-10 years, does that make this contract better?

Some context on the Nats' 10-year, $300-million offer: I'm told from two sources that a significant -- like, made MLB queasy -- amount of money was deferred. One source said it included $100-million in deferrals and paid Harper until he was 60. The PHI deal has no deferrals.

So Manny, and Harper, will not be on the Yankees or Red Sox.

Great news for the O's.

Gonna be a real shame that the Nationals have to see Harper 18+ times a season...

Bryce Harper does not have an opt-out — and one source confirms that was Harper’s choice. @MLB @MLBNetwork

This sounds misleading.  He likely didn't just say "nah, I'd rather not have an opt out".  He wanted the biggest contract ever, so he took the extra money over the extra value of the opt out.

I'm curious to see if Harper's contract is paid evenly or if backloaded.  If it's more than modestly backloaded, it'll likely be worth less than Machado's 10-year deal paid evenly.

I read that it's paid evenly.

It's amazing how much I think this deal is a loser for everyone.

I saw that once this deal is done, the Mets will still have 4 years to pay Bonilla.

Morosi:

In Bryce Harper talks, I am told #Dodgers were willing to offer a four-year deal worth approximately $45 million per season. That would have allowed Harper to shatter the all-time AAV record and become a free agent at age 30. @MLB @MLBNetwork

4/180 or 13/330?

Could he have gotten an 8/130 or more deal at age 30? Probably but there’s no guarantee.

So Harper turned down $30 million per annum from the Nats to sign a contract with an AAV of $25.4 million for three more years. The total dollars do make it a record contract, so I guess that satisfies his ego requirement. Money does define the pecking order.

I guess the positive for the Phillies is they did manage to spread out the luxury tax hit. Not exactly a resounding victory.

Nightingale:

The #SFGiants offered $310 million over 12 years for Harper, confirming @PavlovicNBCS report. The Giants would have had to go at least to $335 or even higher, they were informed because of exorbitant California taxes

The Nats were deferring 100 million and paying him until he was 60.

Still would have been a record-setting contract.

Hell, the Phillies are going to be paying him until he's 40, so what's another two decades among friends?

As a Braves fan I am OK with this.

1. What did he ever win in DC.

2. When Braves pitchers hit him, the Nats never evened things up. That says a lot.

I just can't believe the Nationals couldn't figure this thing out.  If he wants 10/400 or whatever with a 3 year opt out...OK, walk away from that.....but if you can get 13/350 and structure it between 22-25M per...career National...statue...HoF...best player in team history (permanent)....

....I've said this a number of times....just chunk off 30M in current salary as a signing bonus.  Trade the Orioles Zimmerman, Eaton, Taylor, throw in Kieboom and another guy for Mancini and minor pieces.....MASN is worth more with Harper in DC.  Crazy these guys couldn't figure something out.

It's not like Harper went to the West Coast or a great market or anything.  He went up the road to a town with a fickle fan-base.  There's a reason he didn't want to go there, and he went there anyway. Ugh.
