I dont like some of the NFL putting the name of a known sex offender on their Helmets, and I do have a major issue with that.
I do to. I’m gonna get a little personal for a second.
My mom was a victim of domestic abuse 11, 12 years ago, from her boyfriend at the time. Drove herself to the hospital. Went to a halfway house where even us, her family, couldn’t know the location. Had to ask permission and sign out and be back by a certain time if she wanted to meet my brother and I out for lunch or dinner or something. Lived that way for 6 months. It’s not pretty. It’s not like they lock up the male and everything goes back to normal. Normal didn’t happen for like 2 years after the incident when you consider finding a new place to live after the halfway house. Avoiding/ghosting friends of hers that were also her boyfriends. In a small town in Carroll County wondering if you’ll run into the guy at the store or something.
I say that because she came over the day before the Ravens game Sunday. She’s a Ravens fan. I ask her if she’s excited about the game tomorrow. She tells me that she’s done with it because they are letting people out Jacob Blake’s name on their helmets.
Part of me was like, come on. It’s 2020, get with the program, mom. End racism shouldn’t be an issue. But part of me had to remember where this comes from for her, and I don’t fault her for it. I told her I watched the game Thursday and you can’t even tell. She doesn’t mind if slogans are on helmets, she’s fine with kneeling, end racism painted on the field etc...But Jacob Blake puts a thorn in her side as he was a known domestic abuser and sex offender, and in her mind he got what was coming to him. Basically, you can’t stand up for Jacob Blake and stand up against domestic abuse at the same time. Contradicts each other. She’s been a victim, so I have to agree with her.
I know it goes deeper than that, as the point is to bring police brutality to light, not glorify domestic/sex abusers. But if you got your choice of slogans, names to put on your helmet, I’m going to question why one would chose Jacob Blake over others. But it doesn’t bother me enough to say I’m done with the NFL either.
Circling back to the topic of the thread, I certainly wouldn’t nuke a site I owned over it either.
