Not the most encouraging seasons so far in their first full years as pros.
I'm just looking at their statlines, so maybe the Development types would be pleased at areas of their progression. Maybe they are seeing better fastball command, secondaries, etc. Maybe the team likes their professionalism, etc... but results wise, ugh.
You drafted these guys with the hope they'd advance quickly.
In an ideal world, Sedlock and Akin would have done enough at Frederick in the 1st half, to promote at-least one of the two to Bowie for the 2nd half. To where you could have started to envision one of them maybe being promoted to the O's in September.... and having a chance to join the O's for good in by mid-'18.
Right now, you are just looking for improvement at Frederick.
Sedlock has a 6.10 era. He's allowed more than a hit per ip, with less than a k per ip. He's also walked 24 guys in his 59 innings. You drafted him because he was supposedly a finished product. Not a tremendous ceiling, but a high quality arm capable of getting a lot of groundballs. If everything went right, a Scott Erickson type.
He's not done as a prospect. He's not a bust. But if he's not ready to overwhelm Carolina hitters, he is a disappointment.
Akin has allowed 2 er in his last 16 innings, to lower his ERA to 4.55. Again, you were talking about a guy supposed to be highly polished.
To his credit, he does have 61 k's in his 55.1 innings, and has allowed less than a hit per ip (54). Also he gets credit for the recent run of 'success.'
He's also not done as a prospect or a bust. Overall though, I was hoping for more.
My understanding when drafted was that you weren't talking superior physical tools. You were talking pitchability, poise, and polish. So, if that's the case, I'd want the College arm to be having more overall success in High A.
Dietz was the JUCO arm. Faced less competition than Sedlock and Akin... but people liked his arm. Development wise supposedly behind both, so it wasn't shocking to see him head to Delmarva.
But when he goes to the Sally League to start, you are still hoping for much more than you've seen.
0-6, 5.54 era, 72 hits allowed in 63.1 ip, 21 bb's, and just 45 k's.
He's getting it handed to him in the freaking Sally League.
Orioles Director of Scouting Gary Rajsich can't do anything about the O's policy of not wanting to be involved with International talent.... that's not his fault, and he has to take the impact of that when there is 3rd party evaluation of his system.... but he can absolutely be held to the fire if his top Amateur Draft selections don't pan out.
You drafted this trio of college arms to advance quickly in the system. Right now they range from disappointing at best, to mess at worst. That's not good, and does not bode well.
It's important they show better the remainder of this year.
