How A Secret Brotherhood's Revolt Nearly Destroyed The National League
Among them was one whose mind was not on sightseeing. John Montgomery Ward—shortstop, lawyer, and president of the nascent players' union—was transfixed by a short item in the American newspaper, the first he had seen in months, which said that the National League had taken advantage of his absence to enact a salary cap that would cut his income in half. As his teammates prepared to greet the Sphinx, the most remarkable mind in baseball was taking the first steps to a revolution.

@Ken_Rosenthal: Sources: #Mariners interested in Hanley. Some, however, doubt team will make another $100M+ signing. One source says VMart is M's priority.
Could be good for Orioles and Cruz that the Mariners are targeting Martinez.
Mariners may want both. They need hitting. And if they're giving up one draft pick then why not give up a second?

Babe Ruth is number one.
Tough to argue, but I might have put Robinson first.
and Jon Knott 3rd.

Ban Johnson should be a lot higher...

I think Spalding should be significantly higher. I'd argue at least #4, if not above Rickey. Miller should be in the top five, or maybe just behind Landis.

Some of the voting is just odd imo...
I'm a big proponent of sabermetrics, and their influence on the game is notable... but James being in the top 10 feels like a stretch. He belongs somewhere... just feels high. Votes for Foreman, Tango, McCracken, and Calcaterra?
Other votes for FDR, Abbot, Costner, etc...

I think James is there both because of his position as the public face of the sabermetric movement (easier to choose one than split the vote among a bunch), and because of the writing he did that put him in that position in the first place by making discussion of stats and ensuing arguments interesting.

Totally agree... still feels high.

Figured this was as good a time as any to start a huge free agency thread.
