It would be difficult to cheer for Pierce. That said, he's a good shooter and can still create his isbn shot reasonably well. Probably a step back from what that got from Ariza last year, though.
You did not say it but I think Ariza would be a step back from Ariza last year. To many peaks and valleys in his career to expect him to build off last year.

So apparently Ariza is a sign and trade with the Rockets and we recieve 8.5 mill trade exception. What does that mean?
Rockets Acquire Trevor Ariza In Sign-And-Trade
July 13 at 5:08pm CDT By Zach Links
The Rockets have acquired Trevor Ariza in a sign-and-trade deal with the Wizards, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports (on Twitter). The Wizards will receive an $8.5MM trade exception in the deal.
So what is a trade exception exactly? Excuse my ignorance.

I'm sure Pierce will play plenty (especially in crunch time), but it would benefit him if his time can be split some due to a developing Porter Jr.

I don't completely understand it, but I found this:
By acquiring the trade exception, the Wizards now have considerable flexibility to improve the roster and make trades between now and next year. Exceptions are basically credits that count toward the salary cap but not the luxury tax.
Washington cannot use the slot to sign another player but they could acquire a player that another team wishes to dump and fits into that salary slot. The slot can also be used to get a player in a sign-and-trade deal.
The Wizards have two other exceptions – one worth $2 million from Philadelphia in a three-team deal involving Eric Maynor and another for $1.3 million in the deal with Phoenix in a deal involving Emeka Okafor. The exceptions cannot be combined to acquire a player making $11.8 million but have to used separately. Either way, the Wizards now have more options to make the team better – or they can simply let the exceptions expire after one year.

Wiz are looking into a sign and trade for DeJuan Blair. I really wanted the Wizards to draft him in 2009 and would love to acquire him now. Not necessarily a game changer, but he can give you a really good 15-20 minutes per night and would really help out the front court depth.
Wizards are potentially having a really strong offseason.

Apparently Paul Pierce is married to Tito Landrum's daughter.

@1067thefandc BREAKING: Trevor Booker to leave #Wizards, agrees to 2-year, $10-million deal with Utah Jazz, per @MrMichaelLee http://cbsloc.al/W7BeQQ
Looks like they'll be Trevor-less.

Yea, and Kris Humphries will be his replacement. Better player than Booker, not better than Blair.

If he had stuck to swimming, wonder if he would've surpassed the pride and joy of Baltimore, Michael Phelps?

Humphries is a weird dude that is now better known for his short lived time as Mr. Kim Kardashian, but he's a real solid guy off the bench. He should be able to slot in beside either Nene or Gortat in whatever rotation Wittman goes with. He'll also be an adequate replacement when Nene inevitably gets hurt.

Looks like they resigned Drew Gooden too.
Though from what I read that was expected.
Lemme get two claps and a Ric Flair

Great to see Gooden back, as Markus said it was expected. Wiz now have 11 guys on their roster, with Garrett Temple expected to be the 12th man. The roster currently is:
Wall
Beal
Pierce
Nene
Gortat
Miller
Webster
Porter
Rice Jr
Humphries
Gooden
That's pretty damn solid across the board.

Temple doesn't make sense. Team needs another big man. If Nene gets hurt then we're going to have an awfully limited rotation.
