77 years ago today, the D-Day landings. 13 men received the Medal of Honor for their actions during the landing, like -

FRANK D. PEREGORY (age 28)

220px-Peregory.jpg

The Citation -

On 8 June 1944, the 3rd Battalion of the 116th Infantry was advancing on the strongly held German defenses at Grandcamp-Maisy, France, when the leading elements were suddenly halted by decimating machine gun fire from a firmly entrenched enemy force on the high ground overlooking the town. After numerous attempts to neutralize the enemy position by supporting artillery and tank fire had proved ineffective, T/Sgt. Peregory, on his own initiative, advanced up the hill under withering fire, and worked his way to the crest where he discovered an entrenchment leading to the main enemy fortifications 200 yards away. Without hesitating, he leaped into the trench and moved toward the emplacement. Encountering a squad of enemy riflemen, he fearlessly attacked them with hand grenades and bayonet, killed 8 and forced 3 to surrender. Continuing along the trench, he single-handedly forced the surrender of 32 more riflemen, captured the machine gunners, and opened the way for the leading elements of the battalion to advance and secure its objective. The extraordinary gallantry and aggressiveness displayed by T/Sgt. Peregory are exemplary of the highest tradition of the armed forces.

The Medal was presented posthumously, however, because on June 14, 1944, six days after the action for which he would be awarded the Medal of Honor, he was killed.

Today July 3, 1863. Gen Meade's Army of the Potomac defeated Gen Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Gettysburg. The fought of 3 days, casualties for the Union 23,000 and casualties for the Confederacy was 28,000.

Meanwhile out west at Vicksburg Mississippi. Tomorrow on July 4, 1863. Gen Grant's Army of the Tennessee defeated Gen Pemberton's Army of the Mississippi being sieged (May 18 - July 4) in the city. Pemberton surrendered his forces and with the capture of Port Hudson Louisiana on July 9th, gave the Union forces control of the Mississippi River and the Confederacy was split in half. Casualties for the Union during the siege was 4,835 and for the Confederacy was 32,697.

The actions at Gettysburg and Vicksburg makes what Winston S Churchill said on November 1942 seem appropiate.

"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

There's been standoffs like this between garbagemen and homeowners before.

I gotta think there's a backstory here besides "oh, it's too heavy." If that was the case, a lot of people are getting their trash left behind.

I've had great luck with garbage collectors. Baltimore City the guys were a little messy but always took everything even if it was bigger than regulations. Now I'm in AA County and the service is fantastic.

Not sure where to put this, but Zaila Avant-Garde is rather remarkable.

Scripps Spelling Bee 2021: Zaila Avant-garde Wins - The New York Times (nytimes.com)

Zaila, whose father changed her surname from Heard to Avant-garde in homage to the jazz great John Coltrane, has for years found other avenues of success. A gifted basketball player, she set three Guinness world records for the most basketballs dribbled simultaneously (six basketballs for 30 seconds); the most basketballs bounces (307 bounces in 30 seconds); and the most bounce juggles in one minute (255 using four basketballs). With her victory on Thursday, she also became the first winner from Louisiana.

In 2018, she appeared in a Steph Curry commercial that showcased her skills. She also learned how to speed read and figured out that she could divide five-digit numbers by two-digit numbers in her head, a skill she said she had a hard time explaining.

“It’s like asking a millipede how they walk with all those legs,” said Zaila, who has three younger brothers.

Winning the bee became her next goal.

Some videos of her doing impressive and unexpected stuff:

I was watching a show about trains with my little guy and learned that the first transcontinental railroad was built starting on the east and west and meeting in the middle. It connected in Utah. So I was thinking, damn, way to not pull your weight, west coast. Then I learned the east side only started in Iowa. So it’s hardly transcontinental anyway.

Anyway, is football on yet?

Sell them on StubHub and catch the show on YouTube later, I'm sure someone will put it up. Priorities.
