The vast majority of people haven't seen The Wire. ;)

If the show never happened, I think a fair amount of people would perceive Baltimore as not one of the nicest cities. I think most fairly educated/knowledgeable people have perceptions of many of the big cities in this country. That's my experience at least.

An insanely higher # of people have formed their opinion on BMore more on The Wire than on any factual study analysis on the cities crime. I'll put it that way.

Maybe. But the perception was out there before The Wire. Now it's just more prominent.

Man, I LOATHED Entourage..I saw it on someone's list..nothing personal, I just really didn't ever enjoy it.
Anyway:

1-The Wire
2-Breaking Bad
3-Six Feet Under
4-Curb
5-Arrested Development
6-Scrubs
7-Friday Night Lights
8-Mad Men
9-SOAP
10-WKRP In Cincinnati

WKRP!

As god as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly!

One of the funniest scenes in TV history.

SOAP started so many people's careers.

Even if they haven't watched it, a lot of people know what The Wire is about, at least on a basic level. So they feel they can still make a judgement based on that.

Of course, it doesn't help that the next most prominent show (and which more people have watched, easily) is actually called Homicide :P

I watched those two as a kid with my Father, and re watched the whole series' as an adult, and surprisingly they each hold up fairly well.

SOAP was incredible, and I recommend to anyone who has never seen it.

By the way, is this supposed to be best shows (that we've watched), or favorite shows?

Good question. I ranked mine as favorite shows, but if it's best, it'd change quite a bit.

I think The Wire showed Baltimore fine...they didn't show the good points but that wasn't what the show was about.

The bottom line is a lot of what they showed on there is still relevant for today and as sad as that is, it's still true.

Chris tends to look on the bright side of the city a lot, so I get where he is coming from....but this still showed the bad part of Baltimore(and really, most(if not all) major cities).

For me, it's basically going to be the same shows either way. Lets see both lists.

I have only seen a few episodes of SOAP but it was definitely funny. Billy Crystal got his start there I believe.

I don't care that it showed the negative side of Baltimore. That side should be showed, and they did an excellent job with it.

As I said previously, I also agree with the idea that it was not their responsibility to balance that with information about the good points.

My Top 10 was comprised of the shows I personally enjoyed the most. If simply ranking the best shows in-terms of quality, The Wire would be in my Top 3.

DJ's Best Shows:

Drama

The Wire

Breaking Bad

The West Wing

Mad Men

Homicide: Life on the Street

House M.D.

Comedy

Parks and Recreation

Spin City

How I Met Your Mother

The New Girl

Full House

The Drew Carey Show

DJ's Favorite Shows

Breaking Bad

The West Wing

The Wire

Parks and Recreation

Community

Spin City

Family Guy

Murphy Brown

That 70's Show

Mythbusters

The New Girl

Married...with Children

The Drew Carey Show

Full House

Law and Order: Special Victims Unit

Saved By The Bell

I could probably go for a while, especially with random mid-90s sitcoms (Grace Under Fire FTW!), but that's a good, if incomplete* listing off the top of my head.

*Incomplete in several ways. First, because of my faulty memory even when it comes to things I like. More importantly though, because of "great" shows I haven't seen (The Sopranos, to name one obvious choice) or I have seen very little or sporadically over the years (CheersSeinfeldGame of Thrones, etc.).
