Don Denkinger naseball umpire dies at 86.

ESPN gives his obituary and the crawl describes the call he blew in the 1985 WS.

Classless.

If he doesn't blow that call, does anyone know who he is? I don’t know who the best ump in baseball is. But I know the worst.

I get your overall point. The best umps are anonymous. The man umpired in the league for about 30 years,so blown call or not many would absolutely know who he was. There was absolutely no reason for ESPN to have the blown call story in pretty good detail in the crawl under the premise of an obituary.

Jim Brown, one of the all-time greats, 87. I read somewhere years ago where someone said he was the greatest lacrosse player he'd ever seen.

Damn that's a big one. I sat next to and talked to him at an airport bar once like 15 years ago. I was a little embarrassed to be drinking a beer in the morning, but he ordered a white wine so it was cool.

Absolute legend. Not many guys are as clearly the best at whatever they do like he was.

True, he also played college basketball and ran track and field.

He also acted some including a movie called the Dirty Dozen.

He had his issues but was maybe the most accomplished athlete of all time.

RIP Jim.

If there's anywhere the "it's 5 o'clock somewhere" adage applies, it's in an airport bar. Cool story.

Yeah, many forget because most of the incidents occurred in an era where those things didn't get as much attention, but he was charged with assault and domestic violence on several occasions. He was notoriously short-tempered.

The greatest football player of all time, regardless of position.

Two numbers stand out above all others: 5.2 and 0. The former being Brown's average yards per carry (second only all-time to Marion Motley), and the second represents the number of games he missed during his career. He's also the only running back in NFL history to average more than 100 yards per game (104.3). His record of eight rushing titles will likely never be broken.

Trivia: Who was the only running back to beat out Jim Brown for the NFL rushing title?

My wife and I are vacationing on Jekyll Island, GA this week and drove to St Simons Island today.  While there I did a search for famous people who live or lived on St Simons.  It turns out that Jim Brown was born on St Simons and lived there until he was eight.  This adds nothing to his story, but it was an interesting find for me.

Former NFL quarterback Joe Kapp, 85. Kapp led the Vikings to their only NFL championship in 1969 (before the merger) before losing to Kansas City in Super Bowl IV. He is also one of just eight quarterbacks in NFL history to throw seven TD passes in one game, which came against the Colts in 1969. He is still the only quarterback to play in the Grey Cup, the Rose Bowl and the Super Bowl.

Kapp was also on the sidelines as head coach at Cal in 1982 when the Golden Bears beat Stanford on a wild kickoff return known forever after as "The Play."

Hard to believe, but with Joe Kapp's passing, the only living starting QB from the AFL-NFL Super Bowls is Joe Namath.

RIP former Oriole outfielder Mike Young.  He started fast in 1984 and 1985, but his career went down from there.
