MASN / Melewski: Hobgood shut down

This a tough story to see. People questioned his selection when he was picked, and then questioned his work-ethic during his first full professional season.

I had hoped at some point we might get to see Hobgood at full-health, and the potential that Joe Jordan and his staff liked. I regularly saw Hobgood on Twitter this past year talking about working hard, and wanting to prove himself.

Even though he was a prodigious HS hitter, I remember Scouts saying previously that he never projected as a professional hitter. Still, at this point, I'd consider putting a bat in his hand and seeing what you have. Loewen surprised me by reaching the Majors as a hitter. He didn't hit a ton as a JUCO, spent years not hitting at all, and progressed enough as a position player to make it back to the Majors. Maybe Hobgood could be similar?

If Hobgood avoids surgery and you want him to continue pitching, I would make him a reliever when ever he gets back on a mound. Let him show he can pitch an inning or two at a time.

Seems as if he's never pitched a game in the Baltimore system while he was fully healthy, for whatever reason. His development is kind of shrouded in mystery. No one knows when or how exactly he got hurt, why the injury wasn't diagnosed properly, and especially why he's been pitching for so long on a bum shoulder. There's been conditioning questions and his stuff has taken multiple steps back from his high school days.

Still only 21, so he's still young and has a shot to revive his career. But first he has to find out what's wrong with his shoulder and be 100 percent healthy before he gets into a game again. There's a long road ahead of him just on that front alone. I wish him the best of luck. Really good kid.
