I assume you mean "average" for Albert Pujols as opposed to "average" for the average Major League Baseball player
"Average" was definitely a bad word choice. But, he declined for three straight years prior to signing a gigantic contract. Just had failure written all over it.

I know. I just always find situations like this funny. He did decline three straight years, but it was to a low of a .906 OPS (or, an MVP season) from a high of a 1.114 OPS (or, a Ruthian season). Major-league players have wet dreams that peak with that kind of decline.
I think he's got a bunch of productive (though obviously not THAT productive) years left, but as you said, everyone knew that contract would be a disaster sooner or later.

At least the Angels learned their lesson before they signed another horrible contract.
Heh. I'm perfectly happy defending the Pujols contract to a point, but I will laugh heartily for the next four-and-a-half years at the Angels for throwing that much money at Josh Hamilton.
