He was definitely not even on 2B... should have been safe at 2nd for sure.

He wasn't anywhere near the bag. What a joke it is.

How do the Orioles get a break on that one Thorne? Terrible.

I wonder if it would make sense to have an organizational philosophy to have a heavy groundball staff with an exceptional infield defense while sacrificing offense where need be to make that happen (don't need to with Manny).

Wieters caught Gausman's other 2 games. Surprised they'd have a new catcher in for the rookie, when they could've rested Wieters yesterday all the same. I guess the O's just don't think it's all that important, which I would agree. Interesting nevertheless. On the bright side, 2 days rest will be nice for Wieters, which was probably the thing that made the Orioles do this.

I'd dig it. I know the SwStr K/9 #'s are more sexy, but I love ground balls. They're efficient, can erase a base runner at times, etc. Not sure you'd really need to have a philosophy, per se, I think every pitcher, even if they can miss bats with great stuff, should have pitches added to their repertoire to generate ground balls, and the goal should be to have really good defensive infielders anyway, and I think we've seen them sacrifice offense at 2B and be perfectly OK with it given the glove.

Pitch F/X called that 2nd pitch of this AB a Forkball... interesting.

Yeah, groundball pitchers and great infield defense are big positives anyway. My point is if you can really emphasize both of those, you can see more significant returns on the investments on those players.

Agreed. Some would have a fit because their periphs would suggest they allow too much contact/don't miss enough bats.

Yeah, since he doesn't throw one. It was a change if I recall right. What was the velocity? Low to mid 80's?

I think like 84.

Well the idea would be to go get guys like Porcello that are groundball pitchers, not so much to totally change how guys pitch. If guys like Porcello, Britton, etc are pitching well, they'll get tons of grounders but still a fair amount of K's.

Yeah, change. I think he throws his change with a forkball like grip, though.
