Basil Hayden's, at all places, a high end iPC a movie theater in Old Town Pasadena in CA. A full bar outside the theater and they gourmet food choices served right at your seat during the movie. I liked the bourbon but it wasn't the best I've had. They make it with quite a bit more rye than others.

Anyone ever tried aging your own bourbon?

 

Kicking around the idea of these little 1L oak barrels as groomsmen gifts, was wondering how well it works.  Not sure if I'd fill them ahead of time or just give them empty for people to make their own.  Probably should fill them, I suppose.

A friend of mine did a quick and dirty version of aging that yielded a surprisingly good result. Had some moonshine, had a small plank of oak. Put the oak in a hot oven to caramelize the sugars around the edges, then stuck the small plank into a jug of moonshine and let it sit. The color changes happened in under 24 hours, was crazy to see, and the flavor was damn good.

Good moonshine is a wonder to behold... I keep a mason jar on top of the other fridge... the smoothest thing I've ever had... I get it from a guy I know who lives on the river up off Mobile Bay... he knows a guy who knows a guy...

If you are ever down in Richmond Va, go to The Big Whiskey it has a huge selection of whiskey they I have only seen once or twice at other places.  Plus the Owner Mac is a very cool guy.

Prefer bourbon. I've still got about half of my Pappy Van Winkle 23 year old. It's fantastic.

I've really been enjoying the above cocktail which is mostly bourbon and scotch. The hardest thing to find is chocolate bitters but amazon has it for 9 bucks. Highly recommend, and I'd also recommend getting an ice cube tray that makes the big block ice cubes for cocktails.

No I killed the last little bit in November when one of my close friends got married. Gave a little bit to everyone in the wedding party and the brides dad. It was a good way to kick it.

I'd be very curious how that 21 year stacks up to the 12 or 14s.  How much was it?

Was $220 at Total Wine. Looks like it's cheaper elsewhere.

Surprising, they're usually the cheapest around here.

 

I think Lagavulin will be my next bottle.  I've just gotten into scotch, quite like it.  Laphroaig is my favorite so far.

Glenmorangie Nectar D'or is quite a good single malt.  Very interesting compared to the usually peaty stuff I've been drinking.

Laphroaig Quarter Cask is wonderful and only a few dollars more than the regular 10.

I went on a bad spell in December where I went to Total Wine a lot, and every time I went in I wound up coming out with another bottle to add to my collection.

 

I also did the Whisky Advent Calendar this year, one of my souvenirs from England, which helped me experience more variety (not that it was worth the 160 GBP).

 

Have to say my favorites right now are:

1. Lagavulin

2. Laphroaig Quarter Cask

3. Highland Park 12

Don’t know if it’s available on east coast, but Treaty Oak is a local TX Bourbon that I’m currently drinking. Very smooth.

I did the Sagamore tour and tasting last weekend. I'm not a Rye fan per se but the whiskey was good and I brought home a bottle. The tour was great too, not long, informative, and the tastings are pretty generous.


I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

When I took it, the tastings were nothing. The 3 shots they gave us didn’t even total 1 full shot.

We had four, but the white rye was undrinkable so that didn't really count. They were decent sized pours for whiskey.
