Hearing it remains quiet on the Ray Rice front as the clock ticks down to the deadline. Ravens have a history of last-minute deals, though.

Take that with a HUGE grain of salt, I suppose.

The Ravens are closing in on a long-term contract with Ray Rice, working hard to beat the clock right now.
Looks like it will get done.

The only good thing about this is that we take a lot the cap hit in his best year.Wow. That's a lot of up front money. How does this effect our cap situation?
This contract starts this year I assume?

That is good...not as big a long term hit if/when he declines.

The other good thing is that the Ravens could Franchise Flacco next year if needed.

Yes but I assume that this is now set up to where we take less of a cap hit if that happens.Yes, but, couldn't we just cut him in the later years if he declines?

Really better not come to this. The other good thing is that the Ravens could Franchise Flacco next year if needed.
The longer the Ravens wait, the more esxpensive Joe is going to be IMO.

I actually think Joe is going to enjoy quite the "break out" season this year which will only raise his cost.

Seems like the Ravens are confident they can work within the cap this year (and next) by taking such a huge hit over the first two years of the contract.

Jason La Canfora , "On Ray Rice's 5yr deal with Ravens, $25M comes in the 1st 2 yrs, and $24m is guaranteed. He makes $17M in 2012 and $24M in 1st 12 months."
If the Ravens were going to do a long term deal with Ray, this was the year to do it. I'm glad to see it settled and I think it's a win-win for both sides...

Check out Michael Lombardi's column on nfl.com today about what Brees contract means for Flacco, Eli, Rodgers, etc...makes it seem likely a long term deal for Flacco won't be coming until after this year is over.
