It's $25.6M all cap. That's pretty steep unless he's the starter. Zero chance they can get rid of that contract if he's not a starter, nobody wanted him for like $3M this year.
They prob pick up the option

If Wilson plays lights out, they'll have a big decision to make between the two.

I’m fine with that because he isn’t it. He’s QB purgatory IMO. Much better than Whopper Jr Hands, so an upgrade. But not much of one. He’s a viable starter though. This is best case to keep the Steelers knocking on the door but unable to win it all.
Let’s put it this way. I bet he is their long term QB for awhile

Knocking on the door is playoffs most likely. A tough divisional opponent at minimum. Brutal division though Watson is bad IMO. Could see Browns return to a 6 win team until they are out from under that contract

I would think the plan is to go with Wilson at QB this year, using Fields much the way the Ravens used Lamar in his rookie year. Get Wilson 50% or more of the snaps and Fields only costs a 6 round pick.
I also think the plan is to work out an extension before having to pick up the option. A three year contract after 2024 should not break the bank. Fields can't expect to get the same money that was thrown out there for Lamar, Burrow, Mahomes, etc. The trade for Fields only makes sense if you think he is your long term starter.

Fields is clearly capable of being a dynamic runner, see 2022. That can be enough to be dangerous like the 2018 Ravens. Not convinced he can take another step as a passer at this point.
I said the same thing about Lamar Jackson 5 years ago. Lamar may not be on the same level as Mahomes or Burrow when it comes to passing, but he has exceeded what I thought he would be. So I won't make that same mistake again.
But yeah, the two red flags on Fields as a next level starter are his passing and his ability to not get hurt. I've seen enough of him to feel like he can be that guy who takes the next step. A lot of it is on the Pittsburgh coaching staff. If they try to make Fields conform to their system he will likely fail. They would be smart to copy the Ravens and build their offense around what Fields is comfortable with.

I doubt the Steelers pick up a 25.6M option either.
If Wilson plays lights out, they'll have a big decision to make between the two.
The Steelers could do with Fields what Green Bay did with Jordan Love last season. Rather than pick up Love's fifth-year option (a tidy sum for a guy who had barely played), they instead gave him a two-year extension worth $22.5 million (roughly the same amount as his fifth-year option) with $13 million guaranteed. The second year is also heavy on incentives for it to reach its full value.
In this way, Pittsburgh would have a cost-controlled quarterback at a reasonable price for the next two seasons, while Fields would have the security of a fifth year.

Wilson's going to want more money than Fields.

A deal Love is likely regretting. Fields may not want to follow along.
