Also, mostly unrelated...I'm glad there aren't many videos of Maryland's practices under Gary Williams making the rounds. My friend was a scout player for the women's team (he has a National Championship ring, which he wears during the tournament, which is hysterically lame, but it was a fun gig for him when we were in school) and he tells some stories about Gary's practices, mostly the language involved, which would be very poorly received by the general public. Never heard of him physically abusing players, though, or even really a situation where the players themselves thought Gary had crossed the line.

A good example of why the general public needs to get over trying to force a standard cookie cutter PC approach to EVERYTHING and just live their lives. Exceptions are when truly unacceptable behavior is being demonstrated, like this jackass from Rutgers. What a tool.

Right, not every job is like every other job, and what would unquestionably be fireable offenses in one work environment is not the same kind of outlandish behavior in other fields.

That said, what these videos from the Rutgers practices show seems to be pretty much universally across the line, even within athletics and any other field that corporate type of HR stuff wouldn't really apply to.

Just from watching GW during the games, it seemed like he did a good job of being intense but at the same time knew exactly when to stop so he wouldn't be crossing the line.

I saw a comparison earlier a good thing Twitter wasn't around for the Junction camp. There's no doubt IMO that Bear Bryant would've had to curtail his practices or he would not survive today even with his success.

Like you said, there's thing you do 10 years ago that could viral today that were unlikely too then.

The AD is next. No way he keeps his job either. The President may be in some hot water as well since he also apparently signed off on the initial punishment after reviewing the tape as well.

Agree on the AD. Idk if the Prez survives, but IMO he shouldn't. He's not some innocent bystander. He saw the tape and took this way too lightly.

Other schools competing for Rutgers recruits have to be telling them this: If Rutgers would go this far to protect a crappy basketball coach, what would they let a good football coach do to you and get away with?

That's the thing to me. Not going to defend Penn State here, but if they go public with Sandusky earlier, they know they'll get a backlash, nowhere near the one they ended up receiving. Let me reiterate, PSU handled the case pretty bad and they should be(and are) paying a steep price for what happened. In this case, I don't get it at all. If anything, this could be a justification for getting rid of a poor coach since way too often you hear that coaches aren't getting enough of a chance to prove themselves.

The only people I see defending Rice for the most part are AJ Francis and Davin Meggett saying their coaches were Rice-types and they made them better players. I don't get how any athlete can be OK with a verbally and/or phyiscally abusive coach. Some have gone so far to say how "soft" society has become. You can be a intense coach, there's a fine line between being intense and being abusive. For the most part, I'd say 95% are in agreement on this issue including most coaches being interviewed on the subject.

My two cents: I don't mind a coach getting a little intense in practice. Calling names, cursing, pushing a little bit can be excused at times. But this guy takes that and goes overboard. Throwing things at players should never happen, I don't care what the situation. Pushing a little bit I can understand, but throwing balls at players heads should never, ever happen. That's the part that got me. Verbal abuse, pushing, I can excuse that in some circumstances. But there's no excuse to throw a basketball at a young man's head as a coach.

These players are adults, which is why I say that screaming and cursing (even light pushing at times) can be excused. But the kicking, hitting, etc. should never happen no matter how old the players are that you're coaching. Mark Turgeon is an intense guy, but I know he'd never touch one of his players except under extreme circumstances. Same with Gary Williams. They obviously just want the best out of their players. But any coach that hurls balls at players isn't doing it to improve their basketball skills. Glad he got fired, should have happened much, much sooner.

In not so shocking news, the AD is gone too. I found their justification pretty dumb for keeping him initially with the Big Ten move. As if a conference move was justification for keeping a lax administrator. If Kevin Anderson was tolerating this same behavior, I would hope Maryland would take swifter action. I think the President needs to be gone as well. The fact he didn't personally review the video back in November is pretty alarming. And for everyone who says, he's too busy, he has more important concerns -- I say this, the head men's basketball is arguably the first or second most recognizable people on campus (with Schiano gone), take an hour out of your day and review it.
