Slide just mentioned the idea that I had. Let him be the back up catcher. The cool thing about that is, you don't get back up catcher offense.
Many here have been salivating over the idea of Rutschman and Basallo sharing C and DH. Keep both fresh, get elite production from C and probably still good to great production from DH (or 1B).

Understood, I'll delete my post now
Good news! I saw a dog today.

Ideally a C tandem would be the best. Keep them both fresh and their bats in the lineup. But if that doesn't work then you have to figure out how to deal with Adley, Basallo, and another catcher. This to me greatly improves the roster flexibility if you don't need a "backup catcher."

There's going to be a 3rd guy on the roster who can catch regardless. Just let that guy be Basallo and limit it to once a week, or twice at most.

Why? Lots of teams don't carry a 3rd C. If these guys bats are that good then you don't need to ever PH for them.

There is a guy who can serve as an emergency catcher on every team. They may not be a "catcher," but they can do the job for a few innings if it's required. Let him be the emergency option and spend most if not all of his time elsewhere. That's what I mean.

I bet dollars to donuts the O's current 26 man roster already has a guy who could server in an emergency. Maybe we are just talking past each other. The bottom line is that hardly any teams have a "backup catcher" whose bat you want in the lineup everyday. This is the value Basallo could add.

I guess. I feel like it's probably much harder for a 21 year old rookie to be tasked with all the responsibilities of catching twice a week in addition to learning how to hit MLB pitching. I don't know the kid personally - maybe he can handle it. I just don't know if that juice is worth the squeeze. I'd rather he just focus on being s monster in the middle of the lineup and let someone else back up Adley.

He got small balled to death at the end of the start but the stuff is back and he's right.
