The Orioles' need for starting pitching is as obvious now as it was before the trade deadline, and with Burnes a free agent, Baltimore has multiple rotation holes to fill. Their interest in Crochet is "sincere," to borrow the word of one source. He would fill the need for an ace, and because of his relatively low salary, he would fit their budget.

The question about the Orioles now, as it was back in July, is how deeply the team's leadership is willing to dig into the team's wealth of prospects, especially with Baltimore right in the middle of its theoretical window to win. The O's clearly match up well with the White Sox in what each team needs from a deal. This is the first offseason the Orioles have operated under new owner David Rubenstein, and the great unknown is how he will affect the choices of the front office -- or if he will push general manager Mike Elias, as many other owners do.

We are going to piss this window away if we aren't bold enough. Can be smart about things but still bold.

Still think we're in the beginning of that window. I think 2023 was a bit early, but everything aligned for a great regular season. 2024 was supposed to be the true beginning, but the team suffered some major injury setback plus a team wide struggle. No reason not to go all in the next 3-4 years while everyone is still relatively cheap.

What would an obscene amount for Crochet be? More than 1 from the Holliday, Mayo, Basallo group plus whatever from the lesser tier prospects?

Kjerstad, Beavers, and McDermott for Crochett would be my opening offer. Would love to have him but not giving up Holliday/Mayo/Basallo.

I imagine everyone would do that trade which usually means it isn't enough.

But everyone would've made the Ortiz, Hall, Come Pick trade and that was enough. Fingers crossed we can land Crochet.

The real pipe dream is getting both him and Sasaki. Fun to imagine.

Hard to see getting two years of Crochet without Mayo, Basallo, or Holliday being the primary piece.  Cowser or Westburg may get you close enough to not give up one of those top 3 guys. Could consider moving Westy or Cowser as the main piece and filling their spot with a FA.

I just don't think Crochet is quite the type of arm that merits a top-25 prospect for 2 years of control.  Performance was obviously there this year, but he's got durability concerns.  A top-25 prospect is a huge piece.  

 

Lots of teams will be after him, so we'll see.  I'm not saying no to a package led by one of the top guys, though I'm really close to saying no to Holliday, but I would guess right now that Chicago doesn't get a top-25 guy back for him.  That may be tough for the Orioles since we don't have any middle top-100 type guys that should be the centerpiece, so maybe we have to go to Kjerstad or Mayo or Basallo but don't give as much in addition as another team might have to pair with their #60 or so type anchor.

Again, Id prefer to fill SP needs in FA first so Im not looking to trade one of Mayo,Holliday, or Basallo. If Kjersted could be the main piece Id do it though.

Crochet probably a little more valuable than Cease was given the most recent performance.  But Cease had a better track record and similar peak performance with same control left.  The package for Cease was led with a guy at the back-end of the top-100 and two other guys who were top-10 in SD but not top-100 overall.
