It's only important if you feed into that nonsense. 

 

Again, it's a stupid, dated statistic that oftentimes hamstrings managers from doing the right thing. Hyde's not the only one (as I said in the game thread). 

Yeah, I tend to agree.  Just make is "closer" by committee.  Whoever is rested and available that night and who's coming up line-up wise in the ninth dictating whether you bring in a lefty or righty.  It's not like Kimbrel is lights out dominant.

The Orioles aren't paying Kimbrel 12 million a year to be part of a closing committee. That's why it was kind of a big deal when he went through his rough spot. I am not saying that You can't use someone else once in a while. However, if Kimbrel is available, he should get most of the opportunities. Further, the last time I checked, dominant closets make more $, and their successful track record is measured by saves. It's far from a meaningless stat.

I am all for using your high lev guy in the 8th when the tough part of their lineup is coming up and have somebody else "close' in the 9th. Makes no sense to me to use a lesser guy against the tougher spot of the order just because it isn't the 9th inning.
