If Rice can shoot (13-39 from 3 in his 8 game Freshman year) that would really help. Now adequately replace Young and get Reese to stay and maybe you've got something.

Gillespie shot 56% as a 6 footer including 38% from 3, seems pretty interesting. He's kinda small but Fatts was fine the other year and was smaller.

Good to see Willard recognizes that the team is severely lacking and looking to remedy that.

Rice and another starting caliber guard would go a long way.

Julian Reese will reportedly be returning to the program next season. Not sure who, but someone found the money to keep him around.

Yep big news if it comes true. Need 2 more good players. Would be pretty exciting to see Willard and the program jumpstart that level of talent infusion. Then gotta go out and get it done. Transfers can be instant impact or kind of meh.

Malik Mack (Harvard) has officially entered the transfer portal, as expected. The St. John's product instantly becomes one of the best players available, but the UMD tattoo on his wrist indicates Maryland could have an edge here if they're willing to pony up some big NIL money.

The goal with transfers from smaller schools should be to challenge current rostered players for minutes. Not be a panacea / replacement for departed players.

That may have been the case 10 years ago but no longer.  The transfer window/class is probably just as important as the actual recruiting class at this point.

Sounds like Ja'Kobi Gillespie (Belmont) is close to a done deal. Had a very productive visit to College Park over the weekend, and could be announcing his transfer soon.

Do the Ivies side skirt the scholarship issue by offering NIL money? Or is the bigger issue that they won't academically admit a lot of players?

None of the Ivy League schools have NIL collectives.

Worth noting that Maryland's NIL collective for men's basketball has exploded in the last few months. I've seen rough estimates that they've raised something in the ballpark of $3-4 million, which is being reflected by these portal additions (along with the retention of Reese and addition of Queen).

For all the deserved criticism that's been laid at the feet of Maryland's athletic department, it seems as though they're finally starting to figure out how to raise enough NIL funds to remain competitive in football and men's basketball.

Great news if true, sustainable, and competitive. Can't sit out just because you don't like the rules or system. I've been very critical of the organization, but if they can establish this and keep it going that criticism will prove ill-timed at best.

That's good to hear. I don't think this current mess is going to last forever, and I suspect we'll see big changes before the end of the decade. But UM can't use that as an excuse to just sit on the sideline and wait for the solution to arrive. Kinda like how Gary largely refused to recruit through the AAU as his tenure ended because it was sometimes a shady operation....yeah, in some cases it was, but that was how the game was played, and you still have to do your best within the boundaries like it or not.
