Players on MD's current roster, who could be back in 2024-25:

Guards: Harris-Smith, Long, Lamothe, Stephens
Wings: Kaiser, Geronimo, Batchelor
Bigs: Reese, Swanton-Rodger, Traore, Pierce
Incoming Commit: Palmer (Combo Guard)

(EDIT: Zack says Long and Geronimo could potentially return... if they did, that's up to 12 scholarships allotted for, if everyone who could be back was back, and including Palmer.  That would leave 1 scholarship available. I think we can safely assume there will be 4-5 scholarships available.

I put portal in quotes in the topic title, because none of these guys are guaranteed to actually enter the portal.
And who knows if MD would pursue, or if they'd have interest.
There should be some more accomplished guys than these below, but would think most of these guys below are fairly realistic targets.

At the very least they're going to need a guard who can run the offense. Maybe Stephens can do that, but I thought he was billed more as a shooter.

Maybe Reese will go, but I think he stays. Traore looked interesting yesterday - would like to see him get more run. Swanton-Rodger and whoever Pierce is are trash.

Scott and Young are the only players who've exhausted their eligibility, so you need to add Long and Geronimo to your "potentially returning" list.

Given the NIL situation, if you could land a quality starting PG and a quality starting PF/C (to potentially play alongside Reese) in the portal that'd be a huge win. Then you're probably hoping to find two quality starters between Harris-Smith, Kaiser, and Stephens.

For the record, I wouldn't lose sleep if all 10 of those guys entered the portal and went elsewhere.

I don't have much faith in Willard's ability to recruit, especially with Maryland being uninterested in the NIL game, but whatever he throws together for next year can't be any more uninspiring than what we're left with for next year.

Can we add them to the "hopefully not" returning list?

I guess they're OK as the guys coming off the end of your bench, but the roster is already filled with those guys.

Both very good defensive players who don't need a lot of shots. If they can be back, both solid rotational pieces.
You just need more scoring in-front of them.

To add on, Rodney Rice is probably who they land as next year's PG. It's been widely assumed he's headed to Maryland for awhile, given Mike Jones' presence on the staff.

How many years of eligibility would he have remaining? 2? 3?

He'd have 3 years left. Obviously a lot less experience than Young or Russell when they came in, but certainly has the talent as long as he can stay healthy.

He'd instantly be the best guard on the team.

I don't think we'll ever see a portal guy come in and do what Jahmir has done.

I’d be the best guard on the team.

That roster is horrible, and there’s very little chance of savaging anything positive next year given our NIL situation.

Regardless of portal additions, if guys like Harris-Smith, Kaiser, etc. don't improve in fairly large ways you're screwed. Boosters aren't stepping up to get you 3-4 new starters in the portal, so you just have to hope those guys live up to who they were coming out of HS. If not, you're looking at another really ugly season.

Agree with Zack that you need the existing players to play better.

And Rice doesn't figure to be as good as Young.... and West / Scott is probably a near wash... and Buchanon isn't an ideal 4....

Even in this scenario - where you are adding 3 quality players form the portal - that doesn't mean you would necessarily be good.

That's a problem.

It's also a problem that the idea of adding these 3 guys (one who left their team in Oct, another from Nicholls, and another from GW) feels a little bit of a reach.

Will be interesting to see what Willard does, and what names emerge.

Why's Stephens leaving?

He's probably not, and maybe he gives a little shooting off the bench. And despite missing this year, has a little college experience.

But Lamothe and Palmer are bigger recruits overall.  Palmer coming in.  Lamothe... typically most development is in-between the frosh and soph seasons. So maybe he's in the rotation next year.   Also if Long is back, there are minutes there.   So, idk... maybe Stephens is there or he's not.  TBD I guess.

247 still predicts Queen to Maryland, BTW. I'd be shocked, but that's their crystal ball prediction.

Add Queen with Reese. Get Rice. Some improvements from DHS and Kaiser. Add another player or two from the portal. Could salvage something resembling a competent team.

That's just based on Ermann's prediction from months ago, wouldn't put too much weight into it. But yes, Queen would be a massive addition and would definitely change the feeling about next season.

The longer his recruitment stretches out though, the more likely that the boosters from Kansas or Houston win him over with a big sum of cash.

Doubtful Solomon Ball enters the portal unless he’s told by Hurley he won’t get the minutes he wants next year. However, with Stephon Castle likely entering the draft as a lottery pick, Ball will see plenty of minutes for the Huskies.

The guard names I'm seeing tossed around the most are Rodney Rice (Virginia Tech), Malik Mack (Harvard), Erik Reynolds II (Saint Joseph's), and Dug McDaniel (Michigan).

Rice is very likely to come here given that he's already left the Hokies and has a close relationship with Mike Jones. McDaniel may depend on whether or not Michigan fires Juwan Howard.

I'd also like to see them get a big who can stretch the floor. I really don't think you can play Reese and Queen at the same time for more than a few minutes per game against most teams, unless one of them makes huge strides with a perimeter jumpshot.
