Jack Kent Cooke didn't actually leave the Redskins to his son, the son had to try and buy it just like anyone else from Cooke's foundation, which got the bulk of the estate. I didn't realize that Peter Angelos also put in a bid.

I remember his comments about placing a bid. I'm paraphrasing, but he said MLB can't offer the kind of profits that a NFL team can, it's not even close.

It's too bad he didn't have the winning bid, because (IIRC) the NFL doesn't (at least they didn't back then) allow their owners to own a separate franchise in a different pro league. We would have long ago been rid of the Angelos family, and given how Snyder ran the Redskins, their future wouldn't have been any worse.

Good news! I saw a dog today.

The nightmare scenario I can envision is that twerp John forcing a lower court judge to issue an injunction while the whole mess is sorted out.

No chance the team spends any money while that is going on. I could also see Manfred stepping in if this continues to be an embarrassment. His ideal world the team is sold to an owner who is willing to actually settle the MASN issue

Agreed. Above all John's desires, hangs the necessary approval, from the other owners, for him to own the team (if he somehow manages to get the money to do so). I don't see league approval happening, because Manfred doesn't want it. And while the owners are not beholden to the Commissioner, they're probably indifferent (at best) to the Angelos family. Scratch Manfred's back in the vote, and he'll scratch theirs when they need it.

John isn't spending money on payroll now, or ever, even if he keeps the franchise.  Lawsuits active or resolved, doesn't matter, he isn't spending big / long term money on major league talent.  Ever.  It's a money press for him, and spending on major league salary takes money out of his pocket.  The downside of this past season is that he will try to justify it too.  The man lies at levels unparalleled by even the sleaziest of pond scum frauds...

I doubt this is true.  The motivation isn't greed.  It's relevance.

Accumulating short term wealth is required to protect ownership as reasonably as they can.

If ownership transitioned to John, spending money creates spotlight/relevance.

I forgot about that, and not sure how that would have worked if Angelos had the winning bid. The rule was you can't own a NFL team and another pro sports franchise in a city with another NFL team. They added that qualifier so Paul Allen could buy the Seahawks (he already owned the Portland Trail Blazers) and keep them in Seattle instead of remaining with their previous owner who was going to move them to LA (which the league did not want). I'm pretty sure that the rule was loosened even more when Stan Kroenke bought the Rams and moved them to LA, since he already owns the Denver Nuggets too.

Great examples, thanks for clarifying that.
