He starts off with "I'm not good at this..." but all I can think of is how good at it he is. Flanagan was obviously a very different thing but I'll never forget Palmer talking about him after that game.

Fred Bauer, who collaborated on Brooks' book "Putting It All Together," following that Series, later said the most difficult thing about putting that book together was getting Brooks to talk about himself. If you'd listened to Brooks, you'd have thought he had been a utility infielder during that Series.

 

Mr. Oriole. No list of MLB's best defensive players is complete without Brooks.

RIP Brooks.  He and Johnny Unitas were Baltimore sports ambassadors back in the day.  I remember going to a few Oriole home openers as a kid back in the early 70's and the biggest cheers were always for Brooks.  A great player, great spokesman for Oriole baseball, and a great person.   It was a privilege to see him play.  He will be missed.

No words can say what he meant to every little kid who grew up watching him.  We played ball pretending to be him.  At the plate in little league, we bent our left knee back towards our right knee before we stepped into the pitch.  Not because he was good, but because he was Brooks.

 

When it comes to role models, we were unbelievably lucky.

I was at the last game at Memorial Stadium. After the game they did a tribute with all the players. Of course he was the first player out of the dugout. He took his customary spot at 3rd and did his usual manicuring the field in front of him. Gave me chills to see it one more time.

My daughter called me when she found out because she knew that I idolized Brooks.  I told her that even though I only met him a half-dozen times and only had one real conversation with him, it’s amazing how emotional I got when I first found out.  To this day, 5 is my favorite number, because of Brooks.  

 

I honestly feel bad for any Orioles fan who didn’t have the honor and pleasure of rooting for those great Orioles teams of the 70’s and early 80’s.  I definitely have some envy for those who were able to watch the team during the 60’s.

That one hurts.

It really does.  Brooks was and will likely always be my favorite sports person.  He was my first autograph as a kid,  He was signing at a Crown Gas Station, and he took time to speak to every adult, and kid before signing what ever was thrust upon him.  I later got to spend time with him at a business function, where he was our celebrity speaker.  I pulled rank to get the assignment of escorting him around the show.  He had a way to make you feel like a good friend.  RIP Brooksie, and thank You for all you did for the Orioles and Baltimore.  THERE WILL NEVER BE another like you!!

I am not a fan of WAR, but as someone who has been a die hard baseball fan for about 60 years, I will tell you that I do not think there has ever been a better left side of the infield than Mark Belanger and Brooks Robinson.  Magnificent does not do them justice.

I was lucky enough to attend "An Evening With Jim and Brooks" at the Horseshoe in 2014 with my pops. To listen to Brooksie and Palmer tell stories and entertain the audience for nearly 2 hours, all while sharing that with my dad is an experience that I'll never forget.

Brooks couldn't have been more friendly. After posing for a picture with each table, Brooks shook everyone's hand and thanked us. His humility and kindness were second to none.

In such a weird way, when I heard the news yesterday, I felt like I lost a little piece of my dad all over. I don't exactly know how to explain it, except to say that this one really hurts. As it does for so many in Baltimore and throughout the baseball world.

RIP Brooksie....you finally get to play in that higher league, where you always belonged.

Baltimore has been very fortunate to have so many top notch athletes that were also top notch human beings. Brooks, Johnny U and Artie Donovan immediately come to mind. Also, Elrod Hendricks, Al Bumbry and Lenny Moore were/are absolute gentlemen.

Wes Unseld and Boog Powell make my list too.  Baltimore has been extremely lucky.   Brooks tops the list though.

I know how you feel.  The memories of watching Brooks and the Orioles, with my father, at the old ballpark came flooding back yesterday.

My son called yesterday to make sure I was okay when he heard about Brooks.  I passed down those memories to them as they grew up.
