Just now I found myself revisiting this question in my head: who I would choose to keep between Gunnar and Adley if hypothetically only one could be kept? Personally, at this point in time I'm going back and forth. I've seen debates on this in various threads, but want to get people's takes all in one place. My gut says most people pick Adley but I think it's very close. Which one would you keep and why?

Gunnar because of age and career trajectory of catchers.

I think it's a tossup who's better annually for the next 4 or 5 years, but beyond that I think things tip strongly in Gunnar's favor.

I wish I had another year to answer this. Im pretty sure I know what Adley gives you for 10 years. Gunnar Im still not sure. It makes a difference in answering this question. By that I dont question Gunnar will be good but can he be a yearly MVP candidate. That would push him over the edge obviously

Adley, because you likely can.  You can't extend Gunnar.

 

Like Gunnar a lot, but he's not a unicorn.  When he chooses to leave you can replace him.

This. I think Gunnar will be more impactful for the next 8 or so years. But Adley will also be very impactful so you aren't really losing a lot by choosing him. And Gunnar is the one with the agent that indicates an extension isn't likely.

It's difficult to think about extending Gunnar and just ignore his agent.

 

Gunnar has a 6 win season at 22, that's a HOF career opening. If you can keep that guy you do it. To me I think it's pretty clear you take that over a catcher with an inherently questionable aging curve. But still Adley is a great consolation prize in this exercise. Hope we end up with one of them.

The other thing with Gunnar is how long can he stay at SS and keep playing such a good SS. At least by the metrics. I wish he was a little more consistent on the routine stuff but Im nitpicking. Anyway if he can remain a good SS through 27-28 yrs old or longer thats big.

Forget the agent; because first off that's just a guess as to how that would really work out.

 

Gunnar and its not close. No reason to think he can't play SS at least as long as Adley can catch.

Gunnar can shift to 3B which is still a premium fielding position. Adley moves to DH and maybe 1B.

Gunnar is the all around better player and 3 years younger.

Gunnar, especially if this includes beyond the club control window.

Adley is more realistic as has been pointed out.

Neither past 4ish years of service time is unfortunately the betting favorite imo.

Honestly could be talked into Kyle being ahead of him too.

You’re spooked off the risk catchers carry, but want to run full fledge into extending pitchers? Interesting to me. Everyone has their own valuations though, so fair enough. Let’s extend all 4 is what I say.

Given how desperate we’ve been for top end pitching, your thoughts here are tempting for sure. There’s just so much volatility (not even related to health) with pitching.

Absolutely similar / maybe greater risk with pitchers vs. catchers... but yeah, difference for me is just how difficult it is to find those front-end arms.   I'm also not excited about DHing Adley 30 games a year.  (Though he has hit much better as a DH vs. as a C.)

As far as extending each of them? They certainly can present offers to each that would be tough to turn down.

Adley is a heck of a player, but for me it is easy.  Gunnar would be my choice.  I will say it again.  Gunnar Henderson is going to be the next Oriole to win an MVP.

It speaks well of the team, when you can make cases for 3 players being in front of a talent like Adley.
