I accept its a group effort as an outline. Generally speaking. Its ultimately Hyde's decision if and especially when to pull the trigger on in game decisions. I do think the starting lineup in particular is heavily influenced by the FO. Thats the one place Ill buy in. At the beginning of the game.

I do think too that if Elias didn’t like a general strategy it would stop. Like the almost religious adherence to platoon splits, or letting the starter almost always start an inning then pull him after one batter reaches. “We’re not going to do that anymore” is all it would take. Those decisions are 100% Hyde, but they have Elias’s blessing.

Is that any different than Bautista from nowhere? Cano?

Agree it's crazy. But we've had some similar luck.

How dare they get contributions from 7th round pick Luke Raley (let’s be sure to ignore where Means and Mullins were drafted while a former rule 5 pick fights for our HR lead)

FWIW Cowser didn't PH for O'Hearn a single time. In fact he never PH. He played in 9 games that he didn't start. 4 were as a pinch runner/defensive replacement only with zero PAs. The other 5 were:

7/9 Mountcastle PH for O'Hearn, Cowser PR after Mountcastle single, Cowser got a few ABs.
7/15 PR for injured Mullins early in game.
7/24 replaced injured Hicks in OF early in game.
8/3 defensive replacement for O'Hearn, got an AB later
8/4 PR for O'Hearn, had an additional AB later.

Being a PR or defensive replacement and getting ABs later is a very different calculus than a straight up PH, IMO.

I stand corrected.

But they were absolutely trying to carve out a role for Cowser while getting him some ABs off the bench.

You don't see the thick if/then notebook Hyde constantly references? He's literally provided a game bible to work off of. I think it runs much deeper than you do.

I don't hate it either. Doesn't bother me at all. If our analytics team led by Sig and company have angles and theories that can give us an advantage, by all means - use the air plane vs. the horse & buggy. I think "feel" is a bit overrated, but isn't a nothing burger either. This is where Hyde struggles, but how much autonomy does he really have to exert "feel"? I'd bet not that much.

They obviously put a lot of effort into the analytics/game management end of things. I have no issue with it either. I also think with this setup that if things go south, the GM and manager will both be more likely to be fired than just the manager.I also think that Hyde is limited to how many " gut type" decisions he is able to make.

I am not sure its "gut type" decisions we are talking about. PH for a guy who is 10 for his last 28 isn't a gut thing. If they are so into the analytics, which is GREAT, then it just seems to me that they make a lot of surface level decisions.
