Not to make this another Angelos thread, but if the Orioles eventually win a series, he will get his credit.

None from me. Like I said in a past thread, I might literally have to flip the channel for a bit when they hand him the trophy. That is how much I despise that family and think that any success the Orioles have is entirely in spite of them, not because of them.

I think the team is built for a run of several years. But I do worry that since they won't (apparently so far anyway) spend real money that they will have a pitching staff to make a sustained run.

I like Grayson and Bradish going forward. But not sold on Kremer and don't think Gibson should be on this team in the future. Am warming up a bit to Kremer but hes a back end guy to me.

Can they augment those 3 well enough? Certainly can fill those spots but you know the Red Sox, Jays, and Yankees will go buy some talent.

I like Kremer as a 3/4 guy. Ideally he's in the role that Gibson is in this year. A guy who can eat innings and keep you in the game more often than not.

I hope they can retain Flaherty after this season, but I think he'll go back to St. Louis.

Again, mostly having fun and being a bit flippant as the O's are about to get to 30 games over .500 with what I think might be their 'weakest' team for sometime.

While I've said I think the O's will win multiple titles this decade...  who really knows?

Mike correctly pointed out what the Braves did.
You are correctly pointing out what the Rays have done.

Agree with you both.
Really I just want to be either of those franchises.
Where there is a sustained window of excellence.
That is my expectation for the rest of the decade.
Regular annual contention.
Hopefully they regularly get to the post-season, and a couple of times things go right and they get some hardware.

I mean heck even the dominant O's teams from their hey day had bad luck/success in the playoffs.   On the flip side there was no WC back then and the Birds easily could have won another WS or too.

1977 97 wins

1980  100 wins

1982 94 wins

Were just an example of a few great teams that didn't even get a chance to go to the playoffs.

I'm with the hold your horses crowd.

That said, Boston the city, the fanbase, and the narrative was all much more prominent in the hearts and minds of Americans back then, so one reason why we won't become Boston fans is because we are not and will not be cared about nearly as much.

Beyond that, Boston has had a ton of success beyond the Sox during this time period, which in turn both made the fans more insufferable as well make Boston sports' teams more hated.

Yeah, even if the Orioles do win multiple WS, it's not like the team or city will suddenly become that big in the national consciousness. Closest thing I can think of to what it would be like is the Duncan era Spurs. Certainly fans of their rivals were happy to see them lose, but I never recall any conversation that started with "Man those Spurs fans are so damn obnoxious..."

I have noted this many times in the past... but it's easy to go through the Red Sox won-loss record history on BBR.com and see that since 1967 the Red Sox have been an almost perennially "competent" team at minimum.  They have 11 sub-.500 seasons since then (one being the 60 game COVID year; another being the 115 game '94 lock-out year), and most of the rest were 78-ish win sub-.500 years.  Not 55-60 win disasters.  They have lost 90 games TWICE since 1967, and sandwiched those around a WS winning season oddly enough.  Whether you win a WS or not, going in to basically every season thinking your team has a legit chance will do wonders for fan interest and ticket sales.

Since 2000 the Orioles have lost 90+ a dozen times, including the 3 years of 108+ losses.

But Peter Angelos once told us that Boston has the best fans in baseball.

One more thing, as insufferable as their fans are, they still have the best marathon out there!

To add to my prior post, regardless of how great a stretch the O's have, our fan base won't come close to matching the presence NYY and Boston fans have in opposing stadiums.

Other teams fan bases are going to get very sick of us very quickly. This is only the beginning of a long stretch of the Orioles being a top 5 team in the league.

Thanks to the military industrial complex, many people in this country have spent time in the region. I think there are going to be more closet Orioles fans than people realize. We're already seeing it on road trips.

Bostonians are insufferable people. Liking the Red Sox is just part of it.

Baltimoreians, far less insufferable.

Grayson, Bradish and maybe even Flaherty are gonna have to be the cornerstones of the rotation in the immediate future. Maybe a mid-season rental but I wouldn't expect big money being spent on pitching under the status quo.

Assuming Angelos doesn't meddle and Elias sticks around. I don't have much confidence in either one.

Boston fans were obnoxious before any of their post Babe Ruth WS titles. I remember going to an O's-Boston game, well before 2004. There was a young Boston fan yelling about how great his team was. He yelled about how his team had 5 championships, while the O's only had 3. I still remember the defeated look on his face, when I yelled back, at least most of us were alive to see our last championship. In 1918, your grandfather hadn't been born yet.

Good news! I saw a dog today.

Sounds like Browns fans bragging about their championships in the 50s.

Let’s have this discussion when we win something.

I never had friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?

I'm in the let's wait on this crowd.  The Orioles are  having one of those seasons when just about everything is going their way.  They certainly look like they are set up for a run of several years or more at or near the top.  But they haven't won anything just yet.

And let's not forget who the ownership is.  The Angelos hand can always swoop in and turn gold to rust.  They have a knack for doing that.  Remember old Pete strutting like a prize peacock when he refused to sell one year and the Orioles made a run in the second half of the season?  Why nobody but him could have seen that coming.  Obviously he knew more about baseball than all of the high priced executives in the game.  His son is just as cocky, and just as clueless.  Never underestimate the damage the worst ownership family in sports can do.  They can destroy a franchise quicker than Lamar Jackson can run the 40 yard dash!  Hopefully they won't, but until that wretched family sells the team I won't take anything for granted.

I remember saying at the time that making the playoffs that year (1996) was the worst thing that possibly could have happened to the Orioles, and for the same reasons you stated above. It wasn't long afterward that everything began to turn to manure.
