QUICK HITS: Scheduled to make his 18th appearance (17th start) of the season, ninth appearance (eighth start) on the road, and fifth career appearance (third start) against the Twins this afternoon...With a strikeout today, Wells would become the third O's pitcher since 2008 with 100+ strikeouts before the All-Star Break, joining Dylan Bundy (113 K in 2018) and Jason Hammel (101 K in 2012)...Went 7-7 with a 4.25 ERA (49 ER/103.2 IP) in 23 starts for the O's in 2022...Made his first career start on April 10, 2022 at Tampa Bay...Ended the 2022 season on the 15-day Injured List with right shoulder inflammation...Also spent time on the Injured List with lower left side discomfort in 2022...Originally selected by Minnesota in the 15th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft out of Cal State, San Bernardino before being taken by the Orioles in the Rule 5 Draft on December 10, 2020.

Hays is the only O who really has good numbers against this starter although its a small sample size

2 for 6 with an rbi

Hicks is 0 for 13

Frazier is 2 for 16

Santander 1 for 7

Mullins is 0 for 8

It does feel like a conscious effort to keep getting everyone PT. Im not the biggest fan either but this is what having legit depth does. One of Hicks, Cowser, Mullins, Santander, Hays has to sit. Youve got 3 OF spots and a DH. 5 players for 4 spots. You can slide Santander in at 1b for OHearn so that helps with some versatility. Otherwise 1 has to sit. Cant really say Hicks has earned true 4th OF PT at this point. But thats kind of the issue with Hicks. He wants reg PT. Not sure how he would handle being a 4th OFer.

Westburg, Cowser, Henderson, Rutschman, Hays, Mullins, Santander, these are the core that need to be playing nearly every day.

That leaves 2 spots open for rotation to cover the infield.  IMO Joey Ortiz needs to be brought up for good.  If Ortiz does get back up, my lineup for most days would be infield - C Rutschman, 1B (O'Hearn/Santander), 2B Westburg, SS Ortiz, 3B Henderson,

Outfield:  RF Hays, CF Mullins, LF Cowser

DH (O'Hearn/Santander)

The rest can be backups/bench, substitutes or traded/let go: Mateo, Frazier, Urias, Hicks.  IMO, the one I would look to release/trade 1st is Frazier. Keep Urias, Mateo and Hicks as subs.

Gonna be a low scoring affair. Don't want to give up much more than this.

Too many juicy pitches after getting ahead. 0-2 meatballs down the heart of the plate are maddening.
