Final update on Queen for now: the commitment date mix-up was simply a misunderstanding between he and his high school coach. He’ll be announcing his final list of teams tomorrow, not committing.

Wouldn’t read much into this. Maryland still with a slight edge, but Indiana certainly a strong contender.

Donors are going to donate as they donate.  If they want to donate toward the football program, more power to them.
In-terms of University spending; football is going to get theirs as it should.
Nobody is ever going to voice, "Hey we haven't been particularly good for 20 years, and our history before that was spotty too... so let's never try to improve and just fold the program."

You try and improve incrementally and you invest in both.

Now if you are saying that they should have invested in the basketball practice facility before refurbishing Cole; ok.  I don't think that's completely cut and dry there, but ok.

Basketball at MD is always going to get plenty of attention, and plenty of investment.

MD is very good with Lax, and Soccer... Baseball has been emerging.   WBB.

I'm sure the Athletic Department wished there were unlimited dollars to go around everywhere.
But I wouldnt ever worry about MBB not getting their share. Obviously going to always be a lead priority.

This. NIL is donor-driven, and completely separate from athletic department money. The people donating the money are going to donate it where they want. And the facilities buildings also incorporate donor money.

The reason the football facilities got built first is because Kevin Plank gave something like $50M to have it built. What is the school supposed to say? "No Kevin, take your $50M and go wait your turn, we want to do basketball first, even though no one is pledging major dollars for basketball at this time."

Queen announces his final list of schools, which includes Maryland, Indiana, Houston, and Kansas. He'll likely make his decision before the early signing period begins on November 8th.

Kansas and Houston are clearly on the outside looking in, though both are making late pushes. Houston seems more likely, as it's tough to see where he'd fit on Kansas' roster. In reality though, this almost definitely comes down to Indiana and Maryland.

Maryland and Indiana are on similar paths. I don't think kids care about what your school did in the 80s or 90s. But since the early 2000s both have been down more often than up, and recently are back on the come up. Maryland should be able to out recruit Indiana I'd hope.

If he picks Kansas though, well, it is Kansas. Outside looking in can change real fast when you are that caliber of program.

Biggest difference is Indiana’s basketball boosters are far more influential than Maryland’s. If it comes down purely to money, they’ll win every time.

As far as Kansas, unless Dickinson gets injured he wouldn’t play. Gotta be on the court to go one and done, and he’d be on the bench there more often than not.

Is anyone really expecting Dickinson to still be in college next season?

Wow, yeah brain fart on my end. They do have the best center in the country coming in next year though, so still a logjam there.

Just off the top of my head, Zach Collins came off the bench his one season at Gonzaga and still ended up being the #10 overall pick. He's likely a rare example, but NBA scouts probably won't ding a kid who goes to an elite program with an entrenched starter, as long as they show well during the court time they get. Heck, it might even work to your advantage since you're probably logging a lot of minutes against the opponent's backups. With the NBA draft nowadays it's all about potential vs production.

Queen - seems like it's Houston or UMD, Sampson wants him and if the money fits...

Well, now he's delayed his decision and won't be signing at all during this period. Maryland's position seems to be slipping as more and more money enters the conversation. Willard put all his recruiting eggs in the Queen basket, a decision he may well end up regretting.

Maryland seems to be far behind in the NIL race.  College sports are not that much different than the pro's when it comes to signing kids.  Money talks and BS walks.

Gotta have boosters with money to compete, and Maryland has never had that. Outside of Kevin Plank and Barry Gossett, their boosters are mostly small-money folks compared to other major schools. Have to get used to doing more with less, and having Willard as a successful developmental-style coach is certainly promising.

College athletics now is truly like how pro sports would be/were with no salary cap/luxury tax.

We live in one of the wealthiest hubs in the country - you can’t just throw your arms up. Get out there and bring in more big donors. Sell them. We’re not taking about North Dakota State here.

I seem to recall Kevin Plank talking about changing the perception of college football in the Mid-Atlantic region, but talk is cheap.

It used to be that the definition of an amateur was one who accepted cash instead of checks.

The buzz around Queen is starting to heat up again, and it's sounding like Indiana may very well be the destination for him. Maryland definitely on the outside looking in at the moment.
